				Trunk Strut Repalcement

This weekend I decided to replace my trunk struts and retire my prop stick.

All in all, pretty uneventful, Interestingly enough was the modification to the lower attachment on the drivers side. I was expecting to find a clevis type pin that would be a pain to get the retainer off and the pin out. Instead, I found an M6 hex bolt that was screwed into place. I was able to take my 10 mm socket and unscrew it and remove. For others who may need to do this job, this seems to a be a sensible replacement for the clevis pin at this location.

Though some may dissagree, IMHO, the retainer piece is not needed on the lower pins. Well, one might need it one can pull more than 3 G's in a curve

I agree you don't need a clip on the driver's bottom...

Did you ever compress ( by hand) even a *bad* shock ??? The force is enormous...and when the trunk is closed, even more so. That pin isn't going *anywhere*....I've run this way ( even track events) for 10 years with no problems... ---Wil Ferch

I agree that you don't really need the retainer clips.

All I was pointing out was that by having a threaded fastener in this location, it was mucho easy to remove as I was able to get a socket with an extension and universal joint on it and unscrew instead of trying to grip the pin in a tight space. On my other three, I only have clips ont he top ones, and I think that it is mostly for appearance.

Of course if you know the trick, putting the clips on the bottom isn't hard...

With new strut shocks, how did your trunk lid fit? Did you notice any raising of the lid over the fenders/front of windshield?

I was concerned about that but the trunk looked fine afterwards.

The difficulty of this job is nil compared to getting off a rusty starter barrel nut. |
