My 1985 coupe engine lid has a factory Carrera tail & a/c condenser. While I use double struts on the left side (I'm just about to put in 3rd set in 6 years), this lopsided boost in support always seems technically offensive!
I notice the firewall already has a mount for the front end of a RIGHT side strut - so I wonder... ...perhaps the 930 uses L & R struts for the whale tail... Before I grab the calipers & reinvent the wheel, is there a factory R-side strut rear-(hinge-)end mount solution (e.g., adaptor bracket or 930 hinge), or source for a sketch to fabricate a suitable R-side bracket to attach to the hinge? Also, the engine lid is reluctant to pop up on release without help, albeit new struts help some a while: Is a stronger catch push-up spring available, perhaps also related to the 930 whale tail? |

I can partially answer your question, the turbos did have a hood shock on both sides and I had the same problem with my SC when I added a Carrera tail, the spring would not "pop" the hood open,I simply removed the factory spring and went to my local hardware store and matched up a stronger spring, cost me about $2.00 if I remember correctly and it pops open now no problem.

I had this lopsided problem also. Just today I finished my fix. I would take a picture but the sound padding is already glued into place.
I used a set of old 911 hinges off ebay, and swapped out the right side from my car with the left side from the pair I bought. Of course the left side has the shock mount. This causes a slight alignment problem, which is solved with a longer hinge bolt and the proper spacers. For the firewall, I built a bracket out of $1 worth of angle iron (the type with holes) that I bolted to the firewall. I passed bolts out from the interior by removing the rear panel behind the seats. The key is this: whatever you build, be sure that it's strong. The first bracket I built folded right up under the force of the shock. I'm still wondering about the effect of the longer hinge bolt, and I just might reinforce it too.

The 3.2L Carreras that came from the factory with the rear spoiler had the right side strut hinge as well. You might try calling used parts yards for one, or just fabricate a tab and bolt it on to your existing hinge.

Thank you both, two questions, two posts and two solutions in about two minutes! Your posts together suggest the R-side yoke was added to the firewall of 911 bodies after the turbo was introduced... will definitely comply with suggestion to keep stuff beefy.

Welcome to this great board Barry.
FYI for guys w/ earlier cars, my '81 did not have a bracket on the firewall. I made my own and welded it in.

Thr right hinge from a Turbo model has the bracket already attached.
Having a shock at both sides of the lid is the proper way to go. I've heard of "twist" and fitment problems on the left side when over-boosted with double shocks on that side. ---Wil Ferch

I just looked this up in the 911 Authenticity Series - it says only one pneumatic shock was used for all lids 1984 on, whether turbo, option 473 (Carrera) spoiler or none - so it's all a bit of a mystery, looking at Eric's photo of what definitely looks factory and my factory R-side firewall yoke. I'm with Will - both re turbo hinge (now my intended solution) and the gruesome hopalong lefty twist thing. Mr. Haab may have made a teensy error in his book, it seems.
Yes it is a great board, and it's good to be back, Ryan - I was a member a few years ago... Thanks everyone - it's nailed! All I gotta do now is visit my wrecking yard and spin wrenches...

Consider using a shock from a marine store for boat hatches....comes in stainless and is stronger and cheaper. I did, no more corrosion and never had to replace them since.

Mike, including luggage bay, I've bought 6 pairs of struts in as many years... just got a $15 gift voucher from my boat store's frequent buyer (spender) club- since I don't have a boat (excluding Comanche trash truck) this is a great idea.
