DIY Yellow Zinc Plating????
Has anyone done their own yellow zinc plating with one of those DIY kits from Caswell or any other type?? If so, do you think it saves money, does as good of job etc.??

I did my own black oxide plating with a kit from Caswell. The results were pretty good but the finish was not very durable. I ended up sending the parts out to a professional shop to finish the job.

I've tried the normal (silver) zinc system from eastwood. It doesn't compare to a professional job. It just doesn't hold up.
I had a bunch of parts cadmium plated at texas precision plating. They did a great job. You can send them a large batch of nuts, bolts and small parts, and the cost is less than $100. (based on my experience about 2 years ago.) It's hard to find places that can still do cadmium. Th EPA has shut most shops down. Good luck!

Jp & Evan - Thanks for your input! I was hoping to avoid writing down the sizes and where they go. I have them all bagged and labeled, if I send them out I guess I'll need to document them. Thanks for the link to TPP I'll give them a call! Thanks again!!

Wouldn't new fasteners be cheaper than having old ones replated?

Some of the fasteners carried by Metric and Multistandard Components are available in the yellow zinc. The smaller items like flat washers and small hex head cap screws are so cheap (a few cents a piece if one buys a box of 100) it is hardly worth even cleaning the old fasteners. Most "yellow" plated fasteners available these days have the zinc coating; health and environmental concerns have eliminated nearly all the cadium plating operations (and for good reasons). I would really be surprised if anyone is getting actual "yellow cadium plating" done on a batch basis; what is likely being provided is the yellow zinc plating. Cheers, Jim

I did the Caswell Plating CopyCad system and it just isn't worth it. It's highly complex (you have to match current to the area of the part in square inches).
You can only do 2 or 3 parts at a time, and the results are sometimes not great. I found it cheaper to buy new hardware and just replate the few unusual parts I couldn't locate new.
