Hypothetical engine rebuild for a 3.0
Hello all...
Well, assuming that my motor will probably eventually need a rebuild and will (hopefully) be smog exempt in 6 years, I have thought about accruing parts for the big event. So, here are my thoughts on some parts I'd like to gather; 964 cams (or more wild with carbs??) PMO's /Webers Higher compression pistons, perhaps Euro SC's?? I am sure there are tons of things I could do, open to suggestions. Since this isn't actually happening yet, I can spend all of the pretend cash I want ![]() Thanks -b

If you are going to buy new P&Cs anyway, you might as well get the 98mm RSR P&C kit and make it a 3.2. I'm not sure but you might get away w/ S cams w/ those P&Cs and carbs.
If cost becomes a factor, there is also a 98m P&C kit that will work w/ CIS, then the 964 or 20/21 Cams would be perfect. Wayne just had a big write up on the rebuilding forum on Short Stroke 3.2 building, go read through it to see what works and what doesn't.

Or go one step further - do the Max Moritz p's and c's with a 3.2 crank and it will be a 3.4. That's what rdane is doing right now.

Have no doubt, the type of engine you are talking about might cost the same as a 3.6 conversion, and you will have to spend even more to match the hp & torque of the 3.6.
The good side is that it wont be a used engine.

Just save money and spend it when it is time. These engines live a very long time and your opinion about what to do (and the general trends and wisdom) may change until then. I would not stash parts for a project that's several years away, unless I get them now a hell of a lot cheaper (e.g. free) than later. If you are hot for a rebuild, get a car that needs it. ![]() ![]() ![]() George |

Look up the ongoing thread on low cost EFI for CIS motors. Once you Megasquirt it, then get some wilder cams, high compression pistons (unless the pistons are in need of replacement then go for the 3.2). Slap on some SSIs and no stock 3.2 will be able to keep up.
Of course George is right. By the time that the 3.0 is actually in need of a rebuild who knows what will be available... Ultra light weight ceramic based pistons, cylinders, and cranks, bolt on self adjusting lifters, ceramic cylinder heads, super light weight valves. Composite intake stacks with custom EFI. 4.0 L 550hp at 11,000rpm in a motor that weighs 150lbs less and is as reliable as a stock 3.0L. Of course by then all of the early Cayenne purists will be saying things like "Real Porsches have internal combustion engines" when complaining about the new Habanero. Anyway my point is it might be a bit of a wait. SPend the money on suspension in the mean time!

I have a very nice 3.4 that is about to be finished. If I were to do it again my take is there are three good answers. Prices go up as you read down the list.
1. Do a good valve job and add a high compression pistons if you can to your cylinders. If not I wouldn't worry about it. The most economical and reasonable choice in retrospect. 1. Do a new top end and add 98mm Max Moritz P&Cs to your CIS, 20/21 or 964 cams, SSIs and a good muffler (3.2 short stroke). 3.2 crank will add another 2K$+ to the project with CIS (3.4). Add an S cam, carbs or EFI and get another 30 to 40 HP. and a finicky engine. Either is the Porsche purist route. 2. Go shopping for a good deal on a 3.6. Then stick it away until I was ready for the transplant. You can do the other things that will be needed while you wait (oil cooling, suspension and brakes). Costs for any of the three really depends on who is doing the work. Last edited by rdane; 02-22-2004 at 09:09 AM.. |
