car on blocks...
Quick questions guys...I did a quick search and just want to make sure...
I have the rear wheels off the car and wonder if it is OK to have the car resting on the control arms on a couple of 4X4 blocks on each side. This should be temporary...for a week at the most. Does anyone see a problem with this? Please let me know. Thanks in advance. Andy 81 911SC.. |

Are they laying flat so that they cant fall in any direction?
That would not be my first choice but i can't think of why it would be a problem. Just chock the front wheels really well. Paul

Why not jack stands under each torsion cap in front of each rear wheel?

The 4X4s are laying flat...very sturdy actually...I wasn't comfortable using the jackstands I had (need to replace with more solid ones).
I lowered the car (each side) on the 4X4s very gently. Seems to me OK. If ayone has any other comments or suggestions. It would be appreciated. Thanks Andy 81 911SC (currently undergoing RUF front and rear conversion) |

Although the stands under the torsion tube is the accepted way, I estimate that 40% of the total car weight is rearward of the stand and 60% in front. Raise the front and pu stands under the a arms and you have about 5% (guessing) in front of those. So, practically the whole car's weight is on the rear stands.
I see two things here. Yes, Andy, I would buy the best I could find. So, leave it on the 4 x 4s for now. It won't hurt a thing. The second thing is, I don't like to leave the car on the stands under the rear torsion tubes for any length of time w/o some support under the engine. So, again Andy, IMHO, you are better off leaving the weight distrbuted as it is on the 4 x 4s when you are not working on it. My critics would say that the rear car weight is supported by the tube anyway since that's where the trailing arms hinge from. I can't argue the point. |
