New old exhaust gas analyzer

Hm - maybe I do I need a bigger truck.... Between the 3.0 engine and the Bear Gas Analyzer the rear of the truck sits awfully low right now. Anyway I though I wanted to share with the board what MikeZ picked up today using my POST (piece of sh|t truck) so we’ll get his smog issues sorted out.

There is a bunch for sale in california. It is from the new tougher rules requiring all tests to be done on a $40K dyno. Many shops can't afford it and quit the smog stuff, selling their huge (old) gas analyzer for garage mechanic. You too can be a smog expert wannabe by buying one of THESE.

Just got my smog done yesterday, $100 for a car that cost $117 to register. Da#$ new law.

Now here is a showstopper: We unloaded the beast and I started playing with it. IT DOES NOT WORK so far. The thing runs on a 286 PC AT computer. That is really vintage. The computer fires up but give these three short beeps. AMI bios failure code is 64k base memory failure. I tore everything off the board, pulled all the chips, cleaned everything and still nada. It looks like the memory chips 9x4=36 or one of them is shot. Now I am stuck.

I need a 286 PC AT 10 Mhz full size AT motherboard with 8 ISA slots and 1MB of memory. That used to be hottest thing in 1986.... Now try to find that. I am sure there are tons of those puppies in basements, up in the attic collecting dust, but Ebay doesn't even go there.

Can anyone point me into the right direction or even has one?

Ingo

Bummer...I literally just threw away our last 286/386/486 dinosaurs not that long ago.

Did you look on "ebay vintage"? They usually do have some pretty old stuff, like Apple II's and DEC PDP's etc.

Ingo,

You would probably have better luck finding a 386 than a 286 these days. It probably uses an MFM or RLL hard disk, so you will probably have to move the hard disk and controller to the replacement chassis.

Does it really have all 8 slots populated with add-in boards? If not, something like a Compaq 386 Deskpro would probably work.

You might try a Goodwill store, or possibly a computer 'junk' store ... like Weird Stuff Warehouse in Silicon Valley.

Warren,

All the items (motherboard with 6!! ISA cards, 3 I/O, graphics, modem, HD controller) power supply, hard drive, floppy drive) are scattered all over the main console. It's not a PC in the comon sense that sits in there. I can only imagine how much that puppy was back then.

So far I have no idea what OS it runs under. It might be simple DOS or something proprietary. You never know how far they went. So I don't know if I want to go through the hassle to port this to a newer PC.

Meanwhile I have found a couple of distributers online that sell the DRAM chips (MT1259-10) 256kx1 at 74 cents a piece. I might give that a try. The chip pins on the memory chips are corroded. It's not unheard off that this corrosion allows oxygen into the DIP package killing the silicon die.

I might also check into our PC graveyard at the company and see if we have something that I can put to use.

Ingo

Hmmm, that sounds exactly like the bear atlas analyzer i sold last year for $75. same situation, didn't feel like messing with it. I did some research and was told that if the things are tampered with at all you will get all kinds of error codes and had to pay the state licenced technician to fix it for you $$$$$

I have no idea if they are related, but the analyzer I had would beep three times and nothing else.

No problem!
It probably (most certainly) runs off DOS. Just find 386, install same version of DOS (can be downloaded on internet) and copy all software/ directory structure to new harddrive. Make sure all IRQ's work and it will fire up.

I'm pretty sure I have an old 286/386 laptop in the basement closet. If you want it and it did work last time I charged battery (left over for college but turned it on when we moved to this house a few years ago for fun)let me know. I'll double check the working order if your interested and sell it for the price of shipping! Its a lap top so its easier to ship, but remember its not 3lbs like the one I'm typing on currently
PM me or direct email also to make sure I get your request.
