Yet another engine serial number decode
this is what the seller sent me
911703 and 6530730 4 I think it is wrong, she is not the most helpful seller 911/70 is an 911ST motor...so I think it a mistake maybe she means 911/57 amd misread the "/" as seven and the 5 as a 0 plus the engine serial number points to 1973 911T Thanks, just so that I am not passing on an old lady with an ST engine in her basement MJ PS has there been a thread that really breaks down each number of the code (so far I know first digit number of cyl second digit model (but what is the break down) third digit Model year rest car number thanks) |
anyone?

Keep up waiting! I'm trying find it.
|
The 9117 could be the start of the chassis number which would indicate a 1977 911. The Red book doesn't show any engine numbers that I can find starting with 653... If it is 658 then the engine came from a 911 SC
|
what about 911/03? but I don't know what that is.
|
i looked at the stoddard data sheet from an old post by Tom Tweed
653 was a 911T...hmmm the mystery continues |
Or maybe she mistook the "7" for a "/", and the "0" for an "8". So 911703 would equal 911/83. A `73 2.7L RS engine! Ah, one can dream...:D
Seriously, I'd guess it's either a `70-`71 T (mistook the slash as a seven, so it's 911/03), or the serial number is correct and it's a `73 T. SmileWavy |
You need to be sure, go have a look for your self.
Car VIN number would also be a great help. Have her look at the plate on the right inner wing or stamped on luggage comp. floor forward of smugglers room. 911 we all know is car type, next is year of prod, 5th digit is engine/body type: for years '69-'71: 1=T, 2=E, 3=S , for '72-'73 also: 4=blank, 5=TV, 6=SC, for '74 4= Carrera engine 911/03 is a 2.2T engine Europe Zenith 40 carbs 125 HP for '70-'71, but does not fit this engine serial no. "maybe she means 911/57 and misread the "/" as seven and the 5 as a 0" That would fit with engine serialno.: 65307304 and as you said a '73T. Hope this helps more than confuses. |
82SC: lets hear how it ends!!
|
82SC: The 'she' you're referring to is the widow of the shop owner. She is selling off what he left behind. She knows nothing about the engine, nor does the guy helping her to sell it.
I've asked them to take another look at the engine number, but doubt they will, since they are protesting in all caps that they 'know nothing'... |
i bet it is a T...with a red shroud...
the valve covers are black, there is not cam wheel for MFI, the shroud is not the typical resin color...they list it as a 2.4...so my guess is a T engine that was worked on for racing...new shroud, Carbs, bump in displacement but then again...it could be one of these found in a barn stories... plus I trust her engine number...right number of digits, and those are always really easy to read...the 911/03 is suspect since she is prob not expecting a "/" in the serial number plus no self respecting ST engine would have heat exchangers...where are the plain racing headers!!! haha I think I am rationalizing so I don't feel super bad when I miss out on the 911St engine MJ |
82SC: My number decoding source doesn't see 6530730 4 as a legitimate number... maybe everybody elses' source is better than mine (Used Porsche Story book).
