Early 911 distributor - rebuild or new?
I'm sorting out my '69S and just noticed that I don't have the correct distributor. It's susposed to be a Bosch 0.231.159.007 and I've got a 0.231.159.001 from a 1968L. My car has MFI and it does run fine although I've apparently got the wrong advance curve on this dizzy.
I see that the .007 distrib. is not available. I'm not sure if there is a direct replacement or whether I should have the .001 that is in it rebuilt and recurved? It seems to be about $325 to have one rebuilt. Has anyone found a proper replacement for the .007 or is a rebuild my best bet? I'd go with the proper used one but would be worried about it being worn out. Thanks in advance. |

There is probably nothing wrong with using the '68 distributor, and very little but detonation and pinging to be gained by having the distributor rebuilt with a more aggressive advance curve ... on the gasoline available these days! For the 2.4 MFI engines ... T, E, & S engines all used the same distributor! Only the RS 2.7 got a more aggressive advance curve.
My suggestion is to partly disassemble & clean the distributor yourself ... if bushings or new shims, or fiber washers are needed ... you can find them locally and replace them yourself for very few $$$. The following thread has a diagram and discussion of simple distributor maintenance: distributor lube...

Thanks for the excellent links. I'll get everthing cleaned and see where that leaves me. The moto-parts quote should be a good backup.
Early S Man, what is your opinion on going with a Pertronix ignitor? |

FYI I thought I had the 0.231.159.001 but I don't. It was rebuilt using a shell with the 0.231.159.001 part number.
You never know what's really inside is my point.

They rebuilt mine for $60.00. I had it in 2 days. Great work. The thing looked brand spamking new. No more problems.

That's a good point about the shell. I don't really know what I've got or whether I'd be better off with the proper one.
I did some searches and called Barry at IAE in Detroit. A rebuild was $325. I will check with Moto-Parts, that is a great price. |
