SF Bay Area Engine/Transmission Rebuild Recommendation?
My 911 is overdue for a valve job and transmission rebuild. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a shop for this in the SF Bay Area?
My mechanic quoted me at $12k - $14k. He's located in SF and I wonder if I could have it done cheaper outside of the city. |

You could give these guys a call. Bob Grigsby is the owner. Rebuilt my engine and I'm very happy. I'm not saying they're inexpensive, just very good.

Porsche and inexpensive do not go together. Unless you DIY.

Think it all comes down to how much you trust/respect your mechanic and whether you plan to keep the car and continue using your mechanic. I had my mechanic/shop (Jim at eisenbuds, an aircooled porsche specialty shop in Denver) do a top end rebuild on my '86 targa around 90k miles ago and am happy that I had this work done by the same person that continues to wrench on my car, as it provided me with a continuity of service and minimized the potential for finger pointing between shops if anything went wrong post-rebuild. Similarly, my mechanic continues to have a sense of pride in how well my now 172k mile engine that he rebuilt is continuing to run. Even though there's nothing wrong with it, I'm now considering upgrading my engine to a 3.5l twinplug and, although there are a lot of options available for this work, am planning on working with Jim on this for the reasons referenced above.

I recommend RMG Enterprises as well...I used to go to Don Wise for quite some time but had one poor experience and switched to RMG. Couldn't be happier and they are very willing to help the DIYer as well!

Jerry Woods will be more than that. Is your shop The Stable? If not get a bid from them.
There's a good shop in San Bruno. The name is not coming to me. I will get back to you.

All good recommendations for Bay Area Porsche wrenches.

You want a valve job and a transmission rebuild and the quote is $12K in the most expensive city to live in the USA, and you think that is expensive? If anybody can quote you $10K or less, I would question the completeness of the work. These 911 are going way up in prices and therefore the cost of servicing them also go up.

CiscoSF, if your looking for factory quality and not down and dirty call Harry @ Pacific Motors on 10th Steet in S.F. 415-861-1013. You get what you pay for but you won't be disappointed.

The Stable, eh? I recall one bad trans coming out of that place about 10 years ago. May be a fluke?

If a mechanic doesn't make a mistake once in a while he's not human.

I'd put Hi-Tec in San Rafael on your short list: they rebuilt my 915 and did a fine job and I'd trust them to re-build the engine as well.
They are also a long time PCA sponsor and one of the best Porsche only shops in the SF Bay Area.
