Good Deal? 911

It's from Craigslist. I don't know if I'm breaking a Pelican rule, so if I did I apologize.

That is a very good price, but $200,000 miles? Has the engine been rebuilt in that time? if not it is over due and maybe overpriced.
with a $6k overhaul you're up to $19k which is about right for that car with a fresh engine. A lot of it depends on the rest of the car. If it's all tired run away. If everything has been replaced when necessary it might be a nice piece.

If engine/ tranny is ok, that's a great price. Looking to ditch the SC?

I'm not really trying to ditch the SC, I was just thinking about how I'm already at 175,xxx miles with the 1980, and an '88 would have a G50 and a...well maybe I'll go and give it a once over.

If you're limiting your search to high-miles 1988's in N. CA (), my '88 Targa with 165K is also for sale.

Top end done at '95K, good compression. I've found that children are expensive.

Just wanted to insert a shameless plug.

How important is the mileage on the chassis? If the motor and trans are fresh...what kind of issues is a high mileage chassis going to offer? Will this be another money pit potentially?

wes, from my experience mileage on the chassis doesnt tell you anything. at least it doesnt give you much indication. i got my 911 from my stepdad with 42k original miles. and i am methodically going through everything! my shocks are frozen, CV joints kinda dry, brakes sucked. blah, blah, blah. sitting still doesnt do these cars any favors.

if you are looking, there are some cars for sale in the LA area. a hop, skip and jump for you.

unfixed - Gracias. My past experience with American cars is electrical will need replacing after high miles (add years too). I know that can fairly pricey on these cars as well (as far as I can tell by reading here).

Just trying to balance the evils. No Pcar is the worst evil...but you know what I mean. LA is close..I keep checking the For Sale area here

Anyone else care to comment on hig mileage on the chassis?

I bought my 84 for $13K with 183K on it, now has 222K and still runs like a top, motor has never been opened.

If the car comes with a stack of receipts, been well cared-for and hasn't been in any major bender, get an honest PPI and if all checks out, jump on it.

From what I've seen, a good 88 with average (80K to 120K) miles is a $22 to $25K car.

A high-mileage 911 is a loved 911.

My car has 200 000 miles. Most people think its around 5 years old! A 200 000 mile car thats been gone through pretty comprehensively is a better value than a 100 000 mile car thats only had regular maintenance IMHO.

High mile cars are normaly used for a long distance commute, better than stop and go with 100K on the clock.

That one looks like its had a very rough 80 000 miles. For $6,000 you can't really complain though

I don't know. Either the stealership ripped someone else off, or there is something real fishy with those cars. Why would a used car stealer offer it at a below market price? They don't worry about having something sit for a while like a private seller might. Brown on brown targas tend to go for a lot less than a guards red coupe, let me tell you. And finally, 200k miles on a carrera may be still okay, but how much more can you put? 50k?

Unfortunately, most the time, you get what you pay for. I stay away from car stealerships like the devil from the holy water....

Yeah, I feel you.
I just am suprised lately with the prices that I've been seeing on Craigslist.
Makes me wish I had waited and used a little more discretion.

I'm tempted on that brown one, just to be Mr. Brown with the brown on brown 911. Then I could get that job at UPS...
