Bosch Dizzie Swapout question

I replaced my 70T's Marelli Distributor this weekend ( finally got it out of the engine!) and now I need to install the Bosch. I tracked the number one cylinder's plug wires back to the cap. This lines up with one of the marks on the pully. My question is:

The Bosch has a "1" statmped into the side. I assume that this is the number one cyclinder at TDC. But if I use that position, the points lead will be facing inward toward the engine. Is this corect? The Marelli's points lead was facing out towards the back.

BTW, if I am correct the rotor is pointing almost exaxctly at the front of the car with 1 @ tdc.

One more thing, I have the condensor from the marelli, can I just add that into the bosch, or do I need something special?

Thanks

Michael

Michael,
Have you tried contacting Ed Mayo? He'll have the right answer.
I'll try to find his e-mail at home and send a PM.

Michael,

Doesn't your 2.2 have a CDI ignition? If so, you don't need the condenser/capacitor!

The TDC #1 mark on Bosch distributors isn't on the side of the body ... it is stamped on the upper edge of the body where the cap seats ... similar to the following pic of a 2.7 CIS distributor with vacuum retard module.

Here is a thread discussing locating TDC and static timing of a similar points-type distributor:

Static distributor timing

I was wondering about that condensor. Yeah, I have a cdi box back there. The condensor placement didn't even look right for the Marelli. Could this make the car run funny?

Michael,

I doubt that the presence of a large capacitance at the trigger input of a CDI unit would cause any problems ... it is just not needed, since the points are only switching a 140 mA current through a 100 Ohm pullup resistor inside the CDI box -- rather than 7 - 10 Amps through an inductive load in the form of a conventional coil primary current! The most likely effect would be a few hundred microseconds delay in the trigger signal risetime ... but that would be taken care of when the timing was adjusted with a timing light!

The biggest problem would be where and how to reliably mount the capacitor externally so that the wiring would be reliable and not prone to shorting out ... and the ignition cutouts that would cause!

Warren is a PP forum Uber-Resource!
Its a good thing you are there. I was successful in swapping out the distro last night. Got the dwell and tining after 3 sets of adjusting! Now I am all bosch! Bye-Bye Marelli. My car still runs like absolute shyte. I mean its like a bag of Poppin-fresh. But I have a few ideas to check.
During the month-long p226 tool mystery/debacle, I think alot of gas got into the oil. Now there's white smoke when there never was any. So I think plugs are fouling after a few minutes. There is always some water coming out of the pipe now after warm up. I am going to toss out the Beru's and get some magenecor's with an MSD\new coil setup.

Thanks Warren
Michael
