OK, before I get flamed for not doing my homework, be assured I've tried!

I'm trying to buy a pair of 8X16 Fuchs (911 fitment). The wheels have 2 different part numbers:

911 361 020 45

911 362 117 00
My question is, what is the difference between these 2 part numbers, if any?

I was at the local dealer's parts counter today with the same question and part numbers for 16x8 wheels. They showed me the computer display that had both above part numbers, and when inputing 911 361 020 45 it said that the current number to order is 911 362 117 00. The parts book considers them identical.:D $944.00 each, if I order them, with my PCA discount plus tax.

Pat,

There's a difference between the 361 wheels and the later superceding 362 wheels. I've compared 16x6, 16x7 wheels and found some differences in shape of the petals, dimensions, etc. I imagine the Fuchs company improved on their forgings over the years and thus had to update the part numbers for Porsche? Just a guess on my part.

As far as the price you got? Shop around. I've seen dealers that can knock a good chunk of change (more than $100) off the price you were quoted. And that was for a 16x9 911 362 119 00 wheel. But as Bill Verburg keeps saying, Fuchs prices like these make wheels like Kinesis, Fikse, etc. look more and more like the way to go! Especially since 17 in. tires are more readily available in the size, brand one may desire.

JP,

Right. Factory painted centers, factory paint code.

I was speculating to myself that there could be differences in brake clearance on the inside, your pics of the centers seems to suggest that may be true. Prime opportunity to feed Bill's wheel database!

cool

Don & KTL, excellent posts and photos! (I love this kind of stuff)

I recently digitized a 7" (for a CAD model) So, I certainly was getting into thte sublties of the design/shape.

FWIW, the later seem to have gotten a bit more sophisticated, using C2 curvature (rather than the simpler C1 - simple round) on the end of the spoke. (if that means anything to anyone)

I imagine that subtle change helps the tooling last a bit longer, as well as simply giving a better shape.

Coo-stuff - Thanks.

Ha!

We get a guy with some metallurgy background and things really get interesting!

Thanks Glenn. My "improved on their forgings" comment was simply a wild assumption. :p But I figured there had to be a reason for them to change the shape of the wheels in so many ways.

Bill-Thanks for the addition of the diagram to your page! Looks like your dimensions are correct as compared with the other link. When I actually get my hands on some wheels, I'll send you my dimensioons too!
My data is only as good as you guys measure, always glad to have more. Pluses are weights and caliper clearance #s

I found the same thing that Bill did in that some of the backspace numbers don't jibe.....it sometimes comes down to whether ( or not) the thickness of the rim forging itself is taken into account as part of the backspace measurement.....or if its taken from some imaginary "seating surface" the tire rides-on within the rim.

I've posted similar data as Bill's on the Rennlist web site with posted credits from *where* the info came from too. It may even be reposted within this BBS.
