New Engine Swap Alternative

Make sure you are sitting down before you check this out

A little quote

"Replace your high maintenance, unreliable, or just plain worn_out, Porsche 911 engine with a state of the art 2.7 or 3.3 liter electronic fuel injected, water cooled power plant._"

mjshira 02-26-2004 06:01 AM

I wonder how long it will take for this to catch on...

Tim Walsh 02-26-2004 06:14 AM

Interesting. If they can do this I wonder how tough it is to stuff a 996 motor in an earlier car. I thought it was pretty intensive.

Rouxzy 02-26-2004 06:27 AM

Why would anybody want less HP. Their 2.7 is 150 as opposed to Porsche's 30 year old engine is 175.

Yeah, not sure I see the point here???? I guess in this case, I really would "rather have a V8"!!! :D -- Curt

Its not cheap either

from specs page

Prices:

Kit Form: $5925 - You do it yourself.
engine not included.

2.7 liter conversion $7900 plus new clutch if needed. We do the work for you.

3.3 liter conversion $9900 plus new clutch if needed. We do the work for you.

you could do it for ALOT less yourself, the transmission adaptors have been around for awhile, used 1.8 turbo subies are everywhere and the svx had like a 3.0 turbo. far better choice than tainting your 911 with chevy 350....only if it was a 912 or a t model of course.

dd74 02-26-2004 09:06 AM

A little pricey in lieu of a 3.6 conversion.

Sounds cool, though.

I wonder how much "lighter" these engines are?

1.8 or 3.0 Subaru turbo...hmmm...interesting...

MuffinMan 02-26-2004 09:25 AM

$9900 for the 3.3 liter, 230hp version, and it appears as though that doesn't even include the cost of the engine.

POVI 02-26-2004 10:29 AM

Forget about the subaru engine .. Go with a chevy V8
I have a nice aluminum headed 465 HP 355 ci , in my '75 911
mated to a 930 trans .. a real nice set up, and prob fast as you would ever want to go ... and if something happens to the motor
you can prob get just about any engine part you need at your local pepboys ;).

Guys .. dont flame me .. I also have my 'Porsche powered' 3.6 RS clone I built .. that I also love :)

150? I thought it said water pumper. If so, that's a Boxster motor @ 205hp.

JonT 02-26-2004 12:52 PM

They advertise on Rennlist too--just saw it.

A Quiet Boom 02-26-2004 01:00 PM

Call me crazy but couldn't you just rebuild your "tired" engine for that price or less? Hell my swap from a 2.0 to 3.0SC only ran me around $5000, and that included converting the Zenith carbs to larger venturis to run the 3.0 and an MSD system. Add the mega squirt sometime down the road and I'll probably still be under $6500 for a motor with 80k miles.

However, these weigh less, do not use an external oil tank cooling system, (one of the main components in early 911 engine fires),
I thought that the dry-sump system was a feature, not a bug! If these engines are water cooled, and water weighs more then oil, something doesn't add up when they say that the Subaru weighs less then a 911 motor. I wonder if they weighed them both installed?

and they look and sound just like the Porsche.
As opposed to having a Real Porsche engine

Don't the cool collar and/or the Vortex generator claim the same thing, for a lot less money?

Quote:

Engine Specifications: 2.7 liter 6 cylinder 12 valve ,150 horsepower
Lets see, the weakest Porsche 2.7 made more then 150 HP, and the best street versions made 210 with no turbo lag. But coming to think of it, I could most likely get that sort of performance from a CIS 2.7 if I installed a cool collar and a vortex generator!

Besides, Porsche was winning Monte Carlo while Subaru was doing what...?

dd74 02-26-2004 05:15 PM

John - you certainly are a voice of reason.

I thought the Subaru engine was an interesting idea though, just to try something different.

I still like the idea of a 996 engine or a water-cooled Boxster, perhaps, in a 911, though Tyson stated it to be potentially very complicated and expensive.

jluetjen 02-26-2004 05:19 PM

I agree dd74, that the Subaru engine is an interesting idea. But it sure strikes me as an "answer to a question which wasn't asked" or the solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

John,

Scubi was building 360 cc Mini-imitations with a two-stroke, two-cylinder engine that burned oil/gas mix like a chainsaw!!!

RarlyL8 02-26-2004 06:17 PM

That is just ..... STUPID

Who in there right mind is gonna spend that much money to lower the retail value of the car AND GET LESS POWER!

Huh? Secretly plotting to win Monte Carlo and the rest of the WRC a decade or two later... is this a trick question? :D
