backfiring, hard to start

What causes a car to backfire. Im having trouble with starting my car and it will backfire. The neighbors have surendered but arn't offering any help. When I do get the car started and warmed up it seems to run fine.

I have a 2.4 with webers and a electomotive ingintion.

Any ideas on where I should start?

Weber backfire is usually due to a lean mixture. Or your timing could be way off.

What do your main and idle jets look like?

Tom.

I'll check. Also my fuel pump is very noisy. I wonder if I'm getting enough pressure. Im supposed to be getting another fuel pump from unclezak but it must be lost in the mail, its been a month and a half.

I just bought the car and I havn't been able to drive it. Ive been painting and there is no windshield installed. Its always been hard to start, but once started seems to run and idle fine.

I havn't looked at a jet since my motorcycle days in the early 70's. What am I looking for? Blockage?

Backfiring through the carbs or exhaust? If it's through the carbs, it's too lean. Pull the idle jets and make sure they aren't plugged. Do you have a float gauge? (I do). If it runs better when it's warm. I've got an appt at 2 tomorrow, but I could shoot over early....

My backfiring was caused by bad plug wires and plugs that were gapped too wide. I have a CIS system, so it's quite a bit different, but the cold start problem and backfiring sound familiar. As soon as I regapped the plugs and replaced the plug wires, no more problems... my neighbors don't miss the backfires!
