Forget the hp. Imagine how much easier routine maintainece would be if you didn't have to futz with the airbox straps and the bolts to remove the box. Reason enough for me.
Oh yeah, it doesn't make much sense to put a cone filter directly next to the AFM, the air is warmer there than where the stock snorkel is. However, a cut down 3in Fernco and a piece of 3in pvc will bet you out under the deck, where the air is cooler than where the stock snorkel is. I have no dyno results to back this up, just gut.

It's true you should clean and re-oil the filters. However, lapsed cleaning will NOT introduce more dirt into the engine; instead it will flow less dirt (and less air). The dirt tends to pick up even more dirt due to particle cohesive forces -- this is common for any filtration system (ask any chemist on this). So it will tend to clog. There is always a chance that a clogged filter will breach from pressure effects, of course, but filter efficiency increases when loaded.
