The Cayenne wiring issue seems minor, and Porsche is making it right. The second part is interesting, though:

It [the NHTSA] also said Porsche was recalling 1,805 of its 911 sports cars from the 2004 model year because oil isn’t getting to the internal gears due to a part defect. Marschall [the Porsche spokesman] denied that, saying the company currently has no 911 recall under way.

Are they talking about the oil pump?

I don't consider the first point minor if Porsche...as a compnay...hasn't learned to FUSE their cars properly. If chafing causes a short...a fused cirtcuit should be able to help. If there is fire potential with that, then it "seems" to indicate lack of fusing ....

As to the 911 issue,,,how can the Porsche spokes-person by so out-of-sync with the claim of XXXX number of 911's under recall ??? Maybe next week's confirmation ???

Have not seen any recalls notices on my 04 yet, but I drive the abolsule piss out of it. Always between 5k and 7k and done since new. If there is an oil/lubrication issue, this car should grenade soon.

2003 recall data at nhtsa.gov, all 911s had listing for SEATS in the summary, clicking the checkbox for detail told a different story:

Make : PORSCHE Model : 911 CARRERA 4S Year : 2003
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 04V070000 Recall Date : FEB 16, 2004
Component: SEATS
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 1805
Summary:
CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES MAY HAVE HAD A TRANSFER CASE INSTALLED THAT COULD, DUE TO CHANGES IN THE HOUSING CASTING, RESULT IN THE OIL PUMP ROTATION. SHOULD THIS OCCUR, OIL STARVATION OF THE INTERNAL GEARS MIGHT RESULT. CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE COULD RESULT IN A FRACTURE OF THE TRANSFER CASE HOUSING.
Consequence:
INCORRECT TORQUE WOULD THEN BE APPLIED TO THE DRIVEN WHEELS OR OIL COULD LEAK AND CONTACT THE TIRES.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TRANSFER CASE HOUSING AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE TRANSFER CASE. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT PORSCHE AT 1-800-545-8039.

On a minor tangent, every company finds a bunch of little oopsies after the car is released and sends its dealer techs TSB's (technical service bullitens) so they can quietly correct them while the car is in for service and the company avoids the iron fist of the lemon law as well as the bad publicity.

You can call the dealer and they'll run your vin to check for any outstanding "updates".

A recall is pretty signifigant. Fords experienced them with gas tank sealant coming loose, map sensors in the wrong place, breaking lug nuts, etc... but seems to have beaten the rap.

Fords, GM, Chrysler all seem to have constant recalls, must just come with the territory. I love how the NHTSB refers to the 911 Carrera 4S as a "sport utility vehicle".

BTW, I'm amazed no one's chimed in yet about how the 996 is a POS. Must be a slow night......

No, Paul. It's the new 928, except it'll whup our butts on the track!

I sat in a friend's father's 996 a few weeks ago and was amazed at the sheer size of it. It is huge compared to my 911!

All 22,158 Cayennes produced between its launch in October 2002 and July 2003 will have to return to the workshop, including 11,355 sold in the United States where the chunky but sprightly off-roader has proved particularly popular
From Yahoo News article...

Funny, I've never heard of a Porsche referred to as "sprightly" before.

I had to look it up.. it means "full of spirit". Sounds appropriate for the 911.... Cayenne too?

Yes and according to the sales brochure it has the unmistakeable "911" sound. I wonder how they added the air fan sound???
