CRAP!!! More alternator woes...little help please...

So, today I decided to tackle the alternator conversion. I'm switching from an external reg. to an internal. While I was at it, I cleaned and scraped the fan housing and fan, and painted them.

Upon reassembly, it turns out that the thrubolts that attach the fan housing and the rear air guide aren't LONG enough to get any bite. Check the pics:

The new alternator is Bosch part # AL9341X. The motor is a 79 3.0 SC.

What part number *should* I have gotten, or what am I supposed to do now?

Thanks.

I should clarify...it's NOT the thrubolts, it's the alternator housing itself that is a 1/2" longer, and thus the thrubolts lose 1/2".

Can I just go try to find longer ones? Or won't that work?

Uhh, I'm not the kind of guy who says I told you so, but on 2/18. ..

Quote:
It requires a different fan shroud, like a 930. . .4R or 7R or something like that, I don't remember (although I will look on my shroud and tell you this weekend if you want).
You could do like I did, spend three hours grinding down the back of the housing to give the bolts room to fit, or you could bite the bullet and score a later shroud, like a 930. . . 5R or something like that, out of a Carrera, that has the proper depth.

I found the old thread from when this happened to ME in the archives, . ..

Quote:
The absence of a voltage regulator made me suspect this possibility, so, I had ordered a NEW Valeo internally regulated alternator from the 84-89 Carrera, expecting to drop it in. Except that it's too thick, by about 3/4"-- and when the fan is mounted, the blades protrude about that distance from the edge of the fan shroud-- a safety issue to say nothing of making the belt fit.

I thought you were referring to the air guide on the back, which I had the replacement for.

I wonder if I could take it to a machine shop to grind?

Check also the fan nut...may be a 16mm x1 pitch vs later 17.5mm x 1.5 pitch or somesuch...theres a difference there too on some models.

Thought you might want to check this out before you got *too* far..

Yea...the new alternator came with it's own new nut.

I'm going to get the Bosch 400X, which should fit. It will be here tomorrow.

Michael,

I'm new to this latest thread of discussion so I may not have all the facts. Be careful about modding the fan shroud. I can see from your pictures that the two alternators are different and may also have different offsets for the fan. I've heard of people dropping in the wrong alternator and then not having their fan and crank pulley line up.

By the way, I saw you blasting down 28th on Saturday morning. My wife said to me "nice paint job!" Looking good!

Chris

Blasting, eh???

It was too damn early to be blasting, from what I recall. I had played at the Foundry Friday night, and was taking my date home.

I have ordered the right part, and hopefully they'll deliver it to me tomorrow.
