3.8 conversion
Just a point of interest...
I am in the process of getting my 964 ready for sale and wanted to dig up as many records as possible on the car. I managed to get onto the owner who in '96 decided to update the engine (3.6) to 3.8 ltrs. This was done by the local Porsche dealer here in HK. They brought out a guy from GB who did the full conversion including RS suspension, Turbo brakes etc. Anyhow.....(I'm getting there!).... I asked the guy about whether there was a custom chip because my car doesn't seem to have the extreme problems others have with a lightweight flywheel ie constant stalling. The response was no - definitely no chip. The mechanic who built the engine said to the owner that the way to overcome that problem was to enlarge the manifold, getting more air into engine. The mechanic wrote down on Porsche letter head, instructions stating that the car should be started and idled for 3 minutes to stabilise the engine management system, then there would be no stalling problems. Even with a/c on I dont seem to experience stalling problems. Those of you with mechanical aptitude, does all this sound feasible? Thanks, Curious ![]()

No chip? The car will run, but not to it's full potential. Even w/ a custom chip mine likes to get some heat in it before it idles well in the AM, like maybe 40 - 60s worth

Well it has lambda sensor, and that Motoronic ECU probably has some adaptive feature so it will automatically adjust air/fuel ratio.
As for full throttle run, it has AFM that will just measure air-flow and inject fuel accordingly, it doesn't care if its 3.6 or 3.8 sucking air...it just cares about how much air is being drawn by engine.

Like I said it will run, but not optimally.

Sorry Bill and others. What I meant is the previous owner said it had no custom chip. It has the stock chip however.
