Cracked Fuchs?

Spotted an unwanted additional feature on one of my front wheels today. It looks like a crack I've attached some pictures, but it's not easy to see the 'feature'.

Any opinions?

I'm going to look for a replacement wheel. Anyone here in the UK know of a suppliers who might have a good condition 6x16 genuine Fuchs for sale?

Spotted this as part of a general check over today - at least I didn'y find anything else!

You should be able to find 6 x 16 fuch rim quite easily over here. I will also keep an eye out for you. Search the chat sites over here and check ebay as well.

Q. Is it dangerous to leave it like that for street driving? Doesnt look like a major crack...

Reason I ask, is that I recently rubbed my rear Fuch against a curb...taking off approximately 35% of the material on the edge near the tire. There are not any cracks, but I am concerned.

Thanks for your replies.

It is only a small crack, apparently just in the surface of the wheel. The wheel has no other outward signs of damage and I do not recall hitting any serious potholes since I've had the car.

Just hope I can find a wheel in similar condition (without the crack of course!) that'll match the condition of the other three.

Doesn't look like anything I would worry about. In a worst case scenario, it can be easily welded. It is the center part of a Fuchs that can not be repaired. You can weld the lips all you want.
IMHO it looks like a scratch.

Thanks George.

It's very strange - it's definitely not a scratch. It's right in the radius between the outer rim and the centre. It doesn't strike me as a place a wheel would start to crack.

Anybody know the going rate for a wheel in good condition?

I'm hoping that because the fashion is for 7 & 8s, a 6x16 should not be too difficult to find. May be a problem though that I want only one.

Hey ho.

Are you sure its not a scratch? Its very unusual for a crack to occur there. That's not a normal stress concentration point. If you dismount the tire is it through? I'd leave it and watch it to see if it grows.

crack in wheels?

Fuchs wheels don't normally crack. They are forged. If misused they'll bend.
Are you sure they are original, with 911 xxx xxx xx PN.
The weakest point in the replica Fuchs (the cast ones) is where the rim meets the spokes. I've seen this first hand when one of mine broke, going too fast, not a nice experience.
This is how it looks when it's to late to have any cracks checked.

.

If you have one of these use them only for your garden hose or something similar, do not drive them. IMO

I would assume that this is a scratch (if this is a forged rim). It’s unusual for a forging to crack like that this on a rim at this location. Like palle7688 said, forgings typically bend before they crack. Normally on forgings stress cracks at fillets or blends are a series of straight hairline fatigue cracks that run normal to the fillet radius (normal to the stresses). Stresses at this location are radial to the center of the wheel. But this is a single jagged scratch/crack indication. Is this a casted wheel? To be sure, take it to a reputable wheel shop and have it NDT’d (non-destruction tested) for cracks. More than likely it can be blended out and refinished. Let us know what the final results are.

Thanks for all of the replies.

The wheel is a genuine 911 - part number 9113621 AS1062, size 6x16 (ET36), std gloss black centre, anodised silver rim.

It really does not look like a scratch.

I really need to find someone in the UK that can have a look at it and advise whether repair & refurb is possible/desirable.
