Rear quarter window Modification

Ok. I've got some idea on what to look for on the b-pillar side of things. What about the other end? Do you need to fabricate something for the latch to work right?

the threaded insert is there under the headliner. if you are VERY careful, you can peel back the headliner and see where they are. Apologies for omitting the removal of the inner side panels so you can access all the trim and seals, but then again, you guys attempting this are pretty savvy

This is amazing, I was contemplating asking the same question. I've almost convinced myself to remove the AC from my black 930. I figure this mod would make it bareable in Houston. I've gone for a year without working AC and it hasn't been too bad. Of course it's not a daily driver.

If you look at the rear section of this car's shell near the trailing edge of the rear window..is this the area of the latch connection holes that supposedly are *always* there?? If so...here's a clean pic.

To bad there are no pic's of the b-pillar also. I just visited the body shop to view the b-pillars in my car; however, they had not removed the windows. Once I have an opportunity I will take pictures and post for all to see.

I swapped popouts into my 78 SC for better airflow, and the one thing I would add to what has already been stated is that the tabs that come off the leading edge of the 1/4 window fit into SLOTS in the B pillar. I initially tried to bolt them on the trailing edge of the B pillar, and when I tried closing the window it was too far back. No big deal, except that the latch broke as I tried to coax the window shut! DOH!

FYI: I will trade my Pop-out windows for a set of new or used in good shape lexan windows.

I know this is an old thread but I happen to have a rusty 76 and a rough 80 SC that I am rebuilding. And I think this is one of the best descriptions on how this is done. I thought these pictures might help someone looking to do this project in the future.

Here is a picture of the outside of the B-Pillar on an SC. I don't understand how but somehow you have to put holes in the b-pillar so that the parts of the pop out window can slide in here to be screwed into the holes that are shown in a later picture:


And the outside of the B-pillar on the 911S that had pop-outs. You can see the slits where the bracket for the pop out window goes. The SC doesn't have these slits and I am sure that is what has to be cut or drilled out. I have to figure out how to do that.


Here you can see the SC has the holes drilled in the B-pillar for the pop out windows.


Same as on the 911S


And finally both have these holes drilled in the rear


It is hard to describe but in this picture you can see that the chrome trim has extra material that goes up and over the mating surfaces of the two sheets of metal that meet here:


This one is hard to see because it is black trim on a dark car, but you should be able to see that the SC's black trim does not go up and over the place where the two pieces of sheet metal join as the chrome trim does in the picture above. So if you are doing this conversion make sure to get the lower trim along with the windows.

I did this mod on my car and it was pretty easy. I did it during a complete respray however. The ventilation increase is well worth it. These pics are very good at showing what you will see. My car had all the holes right where they needed to be.

Well...no and no.

1.) some versions came in black from the factory...later model years.
2.) Window is slightly different in size.... acording to PET's different parts numbers for the glass.

i found a set of windows with latches and what appears to be the lower trim. Im waiting for a response of further questions from him. I want to put them in my 82sc. Will i need the trim that goes around the rest of the window also?
Upon inspection of my current fixed windows. I am rather baffled as to how they are to be removed. Can anyone give a short rundown on how this is executed. Also how hard are they to get back in if i find myself without the correct parts? How hard is it for someone who has never done anything with windows like this before? Im not so sure that i should attempt it given the picture above of the sc b-pillar. Looks like the pannel needs to be modified to get to the slots ? Im not sure what ill find under there
