Rear quarter window Modification

I'm planning on modifying my 1978 911SC rear 1/4 window (fixed) to the early "Pop-out" style. Does anyone have experience or information that they are willing to share?

Good post! I too will be doing this some day. A PO converted my car to fixed for some reason. 74's were pop-out style. I have a pair of pop-outs waiting to go in, but haven't had a chance, yet.

I do know that you will need to replace the crome (or black on your car) strip that's visable from the outside of the car. The pop-out style go over the lip, while the fixed ones go up to the lip, but stop. Seals will need to be replaced, too.

Do you feel 4 holes in your B pillars under the vinyl covering? If not, they will need to be drilled for the hinges. My car has them. I can feel them below the surface of the vinyl.

I hope somebody will post pics and step by step of the process.

I've always wanted to do this since I sold my 1974 for the 1983 SC.

I think it can be done, but first you have to locate the windows, then podwer coat them black, for these pop-outs came only in chrome, and then fiund all the hardware and the rubber.

I do believe the window size is the same.

I've prchased the replacement windows & trim needed along with new seals. I haven't checked the door post for mounting bracket holes, but will do so with hopes of them being there?

I'll make an attempt to docment the event, but can't promise! The car is in the shop going through an entire teardown for body work & paint.

Thanks, it would be very helpful. All of my P-car buddies either have cabs, or SC's. Nobody with an early car that I can use as a reference.

I've replaced the quarter window rubber on the fixed windows already, so I have an understanding of what's in there. Hince the different trim pieces knowledge. The cool thing is, I have chrome trim on my car, but with a black interiour, so I bought a pair of black latches. I thought it would look less obvious without the bright chrome up agains the black headliner.

I had a 1970S a few years back and found that air circulation with "Pop-outs" are much better than with fixed windows!

I was fortunate in locating the windows, trim, handles, and seals. Now all I need to do is find a shop to have them powder coated?

I believe the window size is the same too, but I have nor received them yet.

Yea, the window size is the same as far as I know, since my car is supposed to have pop-outs, but has fixed.

is the rest of your black powder coated, or is it the stock anodized? If it's anodized, I would think that you would need to get the rest of the pieces done, too. Or at leas the window frames, since they are so close in to the quarters.

Hi Joe,

Yes, my 1974 had them, and it didn't have air conditioning. With the pop-outs, there was a VERY positive airflow through the vehicle, and even in muggy Washington D.C. I didn't feel I needed AC.

Now that I've got the SC, I've taken all the AC stuff out of the engine compartment (leaving hoses, etc in place for POSSIBLE future re-install), and want to get back to the 1974 version of air flow.

I've located the quarter windows and hardware, and I think one can get the the rubber trim easily enough.

Powder coating the edges (since my car has black trim, and we have a rasonably priced powder coater around here in Palm Beach) will probably require me to remove the glass. That's where I'm not sure how to do that, but will learn as I go along.

I hope others chime in with their experIEnces. THIS IS WHAT MAKES THIS BOARD SO GREAT!!!!!!!!

I have been considering this mod for my 78 since removing my AC. I have found an ample supply of the windows at a local dismantler and they have told me that all 911s have the plate where the hinge would mount. I would need to drill/tap holes in mine, but the mounting plate should be there. I have yet to verify this and am almost talked out of it as I have been told the ventilation increase is not that much. That seems counterintuitive to me and contradicts what has been stated above.

So I'm on the fence about this mod, but I sure would like to increase the air flow in there.

Glad to hear that the windows should be the same size...

They were originally anodized, and I figured that Powdercoating would be less expensive? All will be done once the windows are removed, so I can break it down to individual items.

My 70' had no AC and the 78' was purchased W/O AC too, and I must agree with Andras that airflow is better! The weather in Hawaii (though hot) would have killed me without Pop-out windows and Washington state weather is milder during the summer, but can still get extreamly hot in the cockpit!

In responce to Emission and Hetmann's email... Yes I too beleive that it would be cool if Pelican offered an all-inclusive kit for this project at a resonable cost to US!

I was able to find several sources out there for the windows and hardware, but the price varied. One place wanted to charge $100. per window/hardware and another $100. for both? I finally ended up purchasing from another shop for $40. each with hardware and $18. for S&H.

I'll know if I got a deal once they arrive, the photos looked great?

okay: been there/ done this a few times and here is what you need 1) pair of lower horizontal trims from a pop out car- the solids have narrower trims that do NOT overlap the lower window seam so leakage could result if you don't install the pop out style trims. 2) flexible edge trim that seals the headliner and post vinyl to the window opening seams. what ever is not covered by the horizontal lower trim is covered by this black edging- available from the dealer by the meter 3) spot weld drill/ or steady hand and sharp drill bits to remove the vertical thin flange covering the slots on the b pillar. After drilling the spot welds, then pry off this flange on each side. 4) complete set of pop out windows with latches 5) attachment hardware that will screw them into place- the original threaded inserts have been in every car we've converted so far. 6) a little filing on the b pillar to smooth out the surface 7) a little paint to cover up the bare metal left on the b pillar from drilling and filing 8) assemble and enjoy more circulation. Note that the threaded inserts have some movement available so you can adjust the windows to close properly and not foul the door frames

Remember me from Glendale days?

Anyway, which model year has replaceable horizontal trim pieces? My source for the windows and frames is a race car shop which takes older cars and replaces the pop-outs with lexan. Thus they have a choice of windows, and hopefully the trim pieces, etc.

Finally, how does one remove the glass from the frames, so it can be powder-coated? Do the frames just unscrew?

Yes I do, on my 85 Carrera. When I was doing the flatnose conversion this particular window was sprayed with some grinder shrapnel.

taking apart the pop out windows is "fun" the screws sometimes corrode themselves into the threads. The extruded rubber seals are another matter- they are difficult to reattach to the outer edge of the window frames. patience is a virtue. NOTE: Whenever you powder coat the window frames, take care to have the coater NOT get any material in the channels! the thick extra paint won't allow you to get seals or channel felts back in

A lot of clients opt for careful masking of the windows, prep, and paint the frames for this reason
