Shift rod bushing - Help

I am in the process of replacing the bushings on my 87' 930. There is a bracket behind the shifter which supports the shift rod. This bracket has a bushing where the shifter rod passes through. The original bushing had a lot of play around the rod. After I installed the new bushing , it also has a lot of play around the rod. Is the bushing supposed to fit tight around the shift rod or is the play around the shift rod normal... ? Thanks in advance... AL

It has some play. It's the ball cup bushing and the shift coupler bushing, the one behind the seat in the hole, which account for most of the movement.

Can somebody tell me the easiest way to replace that bushing?

Do you have to pull the whole shift rod out of the tunnel?

No, disconnect the horizontal shift rod under the shifter and at the shift coupler in the rear. Then push it backwards in the tunnel to clear the front horizontal support bushing. I found it easiest to remove the bracket supporting the bushing and mount it in a vise and change the bushing there. Soften the new bushing prior to installation by soaking it in hot water; do not use a hot air gun. Jim
