Guys,
I have a 78 SC and am still new to these engines. Now, when looking at the engine, on the right side is what I believe is called the air pump. What is that for? I believe I have seen Euo cars with out them. Someone please explain their purpose. Thanks, JCC

The right side is the air conditioning unit.
The smog pump is on the left side (driver's side) of the engine. The smog/air pump helps to cool the exhaust before it gets to the cat. The pump at most uses 1 hp to operate. |

Yeah....actually it's a compressor. If there is the rest of a/c in the car....you can try and get it running....but the old style refrigerant is NOT cheap. The old hoses leak.....
Best to rip it out, strat over or deal with the heat....

The smog pump injects more normal (unburned) air into the exhaust streem to promote further burning off combustion products. It was on engines long before catalytic converters so cooling the converter is not likely to be the reason for the pumps' existence.

An air pump injects air into the heads and reduces Hydrocarbons. The same can be done by disconnecting one injector on an FI engine.....watch the HC levels go WAY down. Ask me how I know....
