Bent wench (used MAPP gas torch and bent in a vise)) made to assist in removal of passenger side sheet metal and EGR line from EGR valve.
![]() Removed EGR line, high temperature gasket and fabricated aluminum blank off flange for EGR valve. ![]() Air pump bracket prior to removal. ![]() Spacer installed to replace air pump bracket and keep DS chain case cover secured and sealed. ![]() Air injection (12.3 lbs), EGR (2.6 lbs) and exhaust system (25.9 lbs) parts removed. ![]() PS SSI trial fit, fits very well, clears all oil lines. ![]() On to the cleaning! Jim,
I installed SSI's a couple of months ago and have the same set of old parts. (I mean pre UPGRADE parts). What are you going to do with yours? So far I haven't the nerve to "toss" them.

Looking great, loosing that weight has got to be at least worth a fraction of a hp. The bottom of the 76 is sure going to look cleaner.

I've sold the "three to ones" (I have the thermal reactors). I will clean up the parts and store them away (with a set of new gaskets) in case the car ever ends up where the emission control equipment has to go back on. Jim

Will the SSI's not fit with the EGR and air pump equipment?

The air injection system could likely be left in place but the stock EGR system has to be removed or significantly modified as the EGR filter and line interferes with the passenger side SSI. Jim

Jim:
Looks good! I am following your project with great interest as I have a 49-state (non EGR) '76 that I will be installing SSIs and external cooler on. I will also be removing the rail, plugging the air injectors, and replacing the air pump bracket. (sound familiar?) Jason |

Jim,
Thanks for the update. Looks like my cali-car will have to stick with the headers for now. So far I have passed the smog test (twice) without thermos. SSIs and a missing EGR system would probably be pushing it. Oh well, I live in San Diego, who needs heat? One more question, why would SSIs give you a power boost over the headers that you had installed? I thought that three into one system was the least restrictive (and most noisy) one available. The three to ones I removed while better than the thermal reactors are not the equivalent of equal length headers especially when used with the '76 OEM heat exchangers. The SSI's are essentially equivalent to '74 and earlier exhaust systems. I expect to gain somewhere areound 8 to 10 horsepower at my altitude (7000ft). There appears to be no significant weight savings between the 3 to ones with the '76 OEM heat exchangers and SSI's. Removing the air injection system and a portion of the EGR system will shave a few pounds off the posterior. Jim
