if you had to tip, what would you get?

assume a hypothetical situation where you *had* to get a non-stick car. What would be your choice given the typical budgets tossed about around here (ie a 996 turbo isn't an option). 964? 993? A Boxster (I think that was the first one with shift buttons on the steering wheel)?

hmm...sounds like a poll to me

surflvr911sc 03-07-2004 08:45 PM

996, I figure it's the only one that could make me forget I'm driving a Porsche, and if so why not make it the tip and complete the 'evolution'.

speeder 03-07-2004 09:04 PM

I have a friend who wants a new tiptronic turbo right now, (he has a 2001 tiptronic cab), I just don't understand it and told him so in so many words. I stopped by BH Porsche on my way home Friday to look at the one they have, ($160k sticker w/ X-50 package and not a penny off sticker), it's a beautiful car IMO but not really a 911 anymore, more like a big, really fast GT car like an Astin Martin or something.

Zeke 03-07-2004 09:24 PM

I've never driven any of the choices. I would think the most powerful would be beneficial. However, the Boxster with wheel buttons seams inviting. The 996 with the more hp. Can I have an Enzo instead?

rdane 03-07-2004 09:33 PM

Took a 993 with steering wheel paddle shift, tiptronic out for a couple of hours. AWESOME car!

Wife loved it and I could see driving the **** out of it. If I ever buy a newer Porsche...which seems unlikely, it will be a paddle shift tiptronic. Also used it in a Audi TT test drive and it was just as much fun there.

Totally different experience than my 915 with the full WEVO add ons (which is better than most curent japanese gear boxes IMO) but I liked it none the less.

DonDavis 03-07-2004 10:48 PM

993.

Next question.

89turbocabmike 03-07-2004 11:19 PM

993, the culmination of air-cooled porsche technology. I run the Malibu Canyons with a bunch of 993 rennlisters and our lead car(tip cab) makes the 993tt's and GT3's work hard to keep up!

Eric Coffey 03-07-2004 11:50 PM

Yeah, if I had to have a tip, it would be a 993 tip "S" (shift buttons on wheel).

Dantilla 03-08-2004 01:45 AM

I'd probably get a 3-series BMW convertable.

Jim Richards 03-08-2004 03:41 AM

Sporto in an early car. Dare to be different.

xlr8 03-08-2004 04:15 AM

If you have to have an auto you might as well have one of these
or maybe one of these.

;)

n8marx 03-08-2004 04:50 AM

Audi S4. Test drove a 2000 a couple weeks ago. I'll be buying one this spring as my daily driver. Phenomenally fun car, even with the slushbox. Shifting buttons on the steering wheel are a nice touch.

makaio 03-08-2004 05:29 AM

If it was me, a 996 with tip. That's probably my next car. Just because my wife would be able to drive it too. Of course I'm keeping my other cars!

I drove a 964 tip in Hawaii once. Neat, but nothing to write home about, and I definatley missed rowing gears.

masraum 03-08-2004 06:02 AM

I have to think that the latest model that you can get will be the best automatic.

Joe Bob 03-08-2004 06:10 AM

Cayenne

Az911 03-08-2004 06:20 AM

Cayenne Turbo

ValveFloat 03-08-2004 07:42 AM

Although I am not real fond of the car the DSG gearbox in the TT 3.2 is impressive.

djmcmath 03-08-2004 08:02 AM

The auto clearly makes the most sense in a cruisin' car. Top-down showing off is more important than hard driving in a tiptronic car, so I'd pick a Boxster.

Just kidding. I don't want an auto!

I don't think I'd buy a sportscar with Tip/Sporto, I'd buy a Peppervagen with it .... oh wait, I already did. ;)

BTW: I use Tip-mode w/thumb shifters 90% of the time - it's awesome! Probably explains my 13MPG .....

sammyg2 03-08-2004 09:50 AM

I'd get the only one on the list with over 300 horsepower.

Laura-Hergesheimer MotorS 03-08-2004 12:18 PM

When I hear "it has to be a tip" means "the wife will let me have a Porsche but she has to be able to drive it. And she can't/won't drive stick".

Make it a 993.

thabaer 03-08-2004 12:46 PM

Couldn't choose from the list 'cuz I wanted one w/ more than 400HP out of the box and then massaged to beyond 500.

Now all I need is an accomodating sugar mama to fund it :D

Actually, the wife happily drives a stick (and I'll leave it at that). It is more along the lines of a messed up back and *I'm* having trouble working multiple pedals. We'll see how meds and therapy work...

Grady Clay 03-08-2004 03:12 PM

What are your needs?

In the early ‘70s we built a new 2.4E Sportomatic with hand controls and all the other accommodations. It worked really well and was fast.

These days there are all sorts of experienced professionals who can make a 911 work for anyone.

Best,
Grady

Jim Richards 03-08-2004 03:26 PM

Sporto with hand controls? I love it! Is it like the modern paddle shifters seen on some high end sportscars?

Benson 03-08-2004 03:43 PM

I went with the majority. 993!!!

Some people think only the elite snobes shoud hve a new Porsche?

OK! E-mail me. I will take one.

Benson

jaxon 03-08-2004 05:09 PM

The way my knee has bothered me of late, I can see why I may go to a tip some day. When/if the day comes I'd go with the 993. Drove one some time ago and really enjoyed it. Of course I'd have to test drive all of the new stuff first.

What's my name 03-08-2004 05:58 PM

OH I KNOW LETS GO WITH A CAYENNE "S" or a MANUAL MANUAL OR NOTHIN'

I know that pain, Had back pain for years when I was younger. I was always limping around with sciatic nerve pain in one leg or the other. You feel about 50% and can't get a good nights sleep.

I get it once in a while now but it is pretty much gone, just went away?? And I can pick up heavy stuff, But I'm carefull.

Hmmmm, Maybe the nerve died from all the abuse ? :D

Todd, Keep the stick and get a good looking chauffer?

Direct correlation to doing Kinky stuff :)

Clean living has healed it!

Joe Bob 03-09-2004 06:48 AM

Have you considered hand controls????

:p

DavidI 03-09-2004 08:07 AM

993.............no question about it
