Bizarre Whine Sound

Totally baffled by this. Car is 88 coupe with 130k miles. On decel in gear or in neutral I hear a whining sounds almost like a fire engine siren. It starts very low and gets moderately louder then suddenly disappears at about 20mph or just a bit lower. No relation to engine speed and does not vary in frequency so much as volume. As I slow down it gets a little louder. Turning the wheel back and forth, tapping brakes, etc don't make any noticable change, it just dissappears around 20mph. I have Repco metal masters that are about 2 1/2 years old and the front bearings are about a year old. Rear bearings are original but this does not sound like what I thought bad bearings sound like.
Any ideas on what to check?
TIA

I hear the exact same sound??? Usually comes from inside my house when I announce another 4-figure restoration parts order. I'm stumped too- I've tried beating the source of the whine with a rubber mallet but it just gets louder...

I had the exact same noise. Question: Is your heater on when you hear this noise? Mine was the passenger side heater blower squeeling. Turning the levers between the seats fully to the off position quieted the noise. Now I just need to figure out how to lube my heater blower.

Heater is definitely off but my heater fan on the right side does in fact make a noise which I am familiar with.
Just went to lunch and it seems to have stopped at least temporarily. Ring and Pinion sounds expensive. Would a bad R&P stop making noise at around 20 mph? It seems to be limited to when I am slowing down whether using the brakes or just coasting to a stop.
Thanks for the replies.

Check your CV boots. Mine makes the same whining sound under the same conditions only coming from the right rear. After having my SC in for PCA tech inspection, the tech pointed out that my right rear CV boot needed more grease.
I hope it's something this simple in your case
