"Ring" type vs "Clip" type center caps?

Probably old topic for many of you but: Is the 3-clip Fuchs center cap "early" and the ring type "late"? Are they interchangeable? If not, how can I tell which type I need by looking at my wheels? I have a set of wheels with no caps and need to buy some.

What size wheels are you looking to put caps on?

Regards,

Jim,

Yes, the three clips is the early type. Somewhere around 1974 or 1975 is when the change was made. My general rule is ... if the wheel had painted black spokes, then the ring-type clips are needed. 1974 - 1976 polished spokes ... I don't know for sure!

The part number on the wheel is probably a good clue!

The early wheels have a lip which the clips have to pushed past, whereas the ring-type have groove which the ring snaps into. The groove looks as if an O-ring was intended to reside there, sort of like the groove in a brake caliper bore for the piston seal.

Give Ralph Boothe a call... (626) 336-1396. He knows more about center caps that anyone I know. I got my caps through him and they're awesome! Mine bolt in from behind so there's no way anyone can steal them unless they take off the wheels and have an 8mm wrench handy... oops, maybe I shouldn't have said that.

Yes, the 3-clip is "early"..thus the 901 part number: 90136103200
The ring type 91136103200. I understand that generally, the changeover was during the '74 model year. My '74 was built in the fall of ''73 and has the 3-prong type.

Thanks. Sounds like I need the early type and they don't interchange. My wheels couldn't be any earlier, '67 only 4.5 x 15 Fuchs.
