Where to but STEEL in the Bay Area??
With the rising steel prices, I want to go ahead and get some pieces to build my rotessire. I am going to need about 25 feet of 2.5-inch square tubing with 1.88-inch wall thickness, 35 feet of 2.0-inch 11-gauge square tubing, and about 2 feet of both 3.5-inch diameter 3/16-inch wall round stock and 3.0-inch round stock. I will also need about 2 square feet of 3/8-inch thick 1008 or 1010 sheet steel for another project.
All of the pieces are 6-feet and under with most of them much shorter than that, so it might be possible to find somewhere selling used stock. Does anyone have any recommendations for places in the Bay Area? I would like to pick the stuff up today and if they will cut it to lenght for my there that would save a lot of headache. -Britain

Not the cheapest, but definitely convenient - Metal Supermarkets.
They are in Santa Clara and Hayward (I think it's Hayward). Hayward has the better selection usually. Large selection in stock, willing to sell small quantities, will cut to length. They also have large scrap pile you can pull from cheaply.

You can also try looking here ====> http://www.thomasregister.com/SearchHeading.aspx?search_type=product&search_string=steel&sid=0403111313479000006471LW8&uuid=TRGuest
You can search by state, keyword and product type. Of course personal experience is better but perhaps you uncover other options. Good luck

In designing your fixture, try not to depend on expensive materials such as square tubing. Angle is much cheaper and round is somewhat less. You might have to cope round to round somewhere, but if you work on the design, you can avoid most of that work as well.
What are you using for the ends? Two engine stands with extensions work and you can always use an engine stand later. |

Do you have scrap yards down there. Many in my area have new steel at bargain prices.
