Whats up with the Colors???
In the late 70's and 80's did Porsche just buy any color paint they could get their hands on???As you all know, I am in the market. I go and find a great deal and call the seller, through the conversation the car sound GREAT, then the question "What color is the car" and they reply back something like "It's sorta a Peachy color" or "it's Sky Blue, with red interior". I know somewhere sometime they could of been painted, but even on this board, I see some strange color combos............
Oh well, just a frustrated buyer looking for that perfect deal, and its not happening....Thanks for listening to me vent......... EDB

I think this is why we see so many cars resprayed red or black. I saw some really crazy combinations too when I was looking.

There are some people (including me, although mine is black on black) who dig these early colors. Take a look at them--there are beautiful blues, all kinds of light beiges and browns, oranges, etc. I think they soften the red-black macho image of the car without being garish. Unfortunately, pics often don't do these colors justice, you have to see them in person.

Ed, I know how you feel. I'll be in the market later this year, but I've been doing research here for about 2 years.
What I've learned is that while the 80's had some... ahh... interesting colors, there seem to be enough of the "good" colors out there tho'. Some of the best deals are on the "bad" colored cars. Less people like the "bad" colors, so the prices should reflect this. There seems to be alot of guards red SC and Carreras out there. There's a beige SC forsale in the classified area, and although it looks like a great car, the color might not be for everyone (my bus is beige, so what do I know). I've never cared for green cars, but after seeing cars like pwd72 and rs911's early green cars, I've become a big fan. Tangerine is another one of my favorites as is some of the blues (gemini). Serpia (sic) brown is growing on me. Color is really a subjective thing. Some people back in the day ordered some ahh... interesting ... colors. I don't like white, brown, or gold cars, but that's just me. I think that alot of the 70's period colors are great:

Color trends come & go.
You wouldn't be caught dead 15 years ago with a Viper Green or Signal Orange 911, and now, those are colors that demand premiums on early 911s. However, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Sepia Brown to come back... BTW, many Euro cars of the 80s had white interiors. Imagine that in a cab in any big city in America! My '85 cab's Champagne interior was filthy with smog/grime after only a few months in El lay.

LeLand,
You should't have any problems selling your car. Plaid is such a nice color.

Early cars have great colors - colors that would look like crap on any other car, but work so well on them. Aubergine, Signal Orange, Viper Green, Sepia Brown - all great colors but only work on early 911s (or 912s, or even 914s). The late 70s and early 80s on the other hand, well... lets just say I hope you like the earthtones...
At least some of the colors are unique. Of all the 911s I've seen, mine is the only Pastel Beige one I've ever seen.

The worst colors I ever saw I found on eBay when I was looking for a turbo. They were early 90's 965s, special factory color treatment inside and out -- one was purple, and one was mint green. As bad as the exteriors looked, you shoulda seen those interiors. UGH.
Yes, I'd like to special order this in a color that makes this beautiful car repulsive. There's no accounting for taste. |

My intention was to get a black on black until I found my Ice Green Metalic. Special order color and still very sharp. Can't find pic but will post later.

Bell,
Your Targa is beautiful. Although I personally love the burgundy/red interior with a white exterior, black would look excellent too. Larry
