Gear identification

Can anyone help me identify a couple of gears?

I have a stock 4th and a stock 5th and the only numbers I could find on the gears were:

2348
9223

Does this help identify anything? Which one is which?

My car is a 79sc.

Thanks for the help.

Slider,

I am uncertain if you are looking for gear ratios, or attempting to decode those 4 digit numbers. We can shed some light on the gearing itself.

If you indeed have a factory stock 915 gearbox in your SC, 4th gear ratio is 26/26 yielding a final drive ratio of 1.000 to 1. Your 5th gear ratio is 28/23, which yields a final drive of 0.821.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response Ed,

I am trying to figure out which gear is which because I want to put the stock 5th back in my transmission. I have a fully active gear box now and 5th is killing me on the higway because it is almost 1:1 and I am tired of running that many RPM's going down the road.

Thanks again.....

Count the teeth. Your stock 5th gear pair has 28 teeth and 23 teeth respectively.

the scribed 4 digit numbers are just matching numbers for the gear set.

Slider,

The four digit numbers are serial numbers only and should be numbered in pairs.

5th gear pair is the gear pair with the smallest of the two spline configurations. This will allow you to ID any 5th gear set, regardless of ratio.

Hayden
