Carrera oil cooler fan wiring question

I am hooking up a carrera cooler with a fan and have the relay and relay harness but I don't know which wires correspond to the numbered terminals on the relay. The harness can't be taken apart and I have a gray wire, a brown, wire, a red wire, and two red/white wires. Does anyone know which wires go to which terminals on the relay?
Thanks,
Manny

Try this:
oil cooler fan thermoswitch

Make sure the fan runs in the correct direction. If not, reverse the two wires.

The wires on the diagram provided by flinstone don't match the color's on my harness. I have a red, brown, gray, and two red/white wires. Should I chuck the harness and just put connectors straight on the relay? The harness looks cleaner though and I would like to use it.

use your multimeter. couldnt you set your meter to beep when there is continuity? and just label the wires? i dont know much about relays, but finstones' diagram was perfect for my install.

Problem is, you don't really have a harness, only the generic relay socket and pigtails. Give me a minute and I will give you the right colors.

Cool thanks. The relay and pigtails are factory pieces so I am hoping that the colors match up - it is impossible to find out which wire goes to which terminal without hacking through the $35 harness.

Wayne also has new carrera harnesses. They run about $100 for both pieces. This is what it looks like.

But it is not difficult to build your own. Your wires colors matched to the relay pins in my drawing:
red-30
brown-85
grey-86
red/white 87
red white 87a (unused)
You need a meter or test light to decide which of the red/whites are 87 and 87a(unused). If you don't have one, you can guess (50/50 chance). If you hook up to 87a by accident, your fan will run all the time except when the thermostat closes. Then you would have to switch the wires.
Also, the fuses listed on my previous diagram are for a '74, '75. You need to doublecheck to make sure they are correct for your car (I don't know what yearyour car is). The tech article emcon posted a link to lists the correct ones for an SC.

Thanks buddy! Have a great day!

code7...let us know if you have any more questions.
By the way, if you buy the full harness rom PP ( a bit pricey), it comes with a relay socket and the connectors hardwired in so it makes a really clean install. If you chose that route, you could return your relay socket for refund to reduce overall cost somewhat. Good luck!

Most use the factory fan. Elephant racing http://www.elephantracing.com/oilhandling/fans.htm
sells alternatives that are cheaper and pull more air...Personally, I chose the factory one from PP and the factory harness. Both are similar to mount.

i finally got around to installing a switch. i went and bought a used switch that fit in one of those factory locations (sun roof?). testing it, the fan pulls an amazing amount of air!
mine is the factory fan.

Is there a reason for choosing the factory ones even though they cost more and dont pull as much air?

One place is good as any...seems we redo this thread every couple months. It is a great upgrade...seems simple, but requires multiple skills.
Reasons to choose the factory one? None that I know of...other than...like the rest of the carrera setup...it is the factory way (porsche engineered), well documented and has worked well for the past 23 years. Its a good selling point for the car. Some might consider aftermarket setups to be "Mickey Mouse." You know.....ie the Chevy engine in a Porsche. If done right, any decent P-car mechanic can instantly recognize the factory unit and repair or find parts for it. It is possible that the factory setup is more durable or less prone to moisture damage (it is mounted in a very hot, wet, high vibration area), but I have not seen any evidence to support that.

Cross thread post, single data point, take it for what its worth, but my 12.50 1v 350 cfm computer fan is about the same physical size and is fine after a year in all weather. I had the car apart for a repaint, so installing it was no issue, maybe I'd feel different if I had to r/r the bumper and valence just to do the fan.
