930 rotors w/ big silver-fvd caliper adapter needs washers?
I have just installed late model 930 rotors with 993 front calipers on my 79 sc using FVD adapters. the adapter fits the strut, but the adapter needs about 3/8" in washers to clear the rotor.
Is this normal to use washers with this setup, it just doesn't look right? Last edited by sc; 03-22-2004 at 04:27 PM.. |

I'm using 930 hubs as well. The calipers are dead center on the centerline of the rotors, but without the washers the caliper makes contact with the rotor.

If I understand you, it is fine to use some spacers to center the caliper on the rotor

A washer yes, but 3/8" seems to be a lot. Have you contacted FVD? The 993 front caliper has the same o/s as a Big Red neither uses more than a thin washer when used w/ 2 piece rotors and the correct flat hat. ANY caliper o/s is supposed to be in the caliper adaptor
![]() This is what a correct installation should look like. I suspect that the issue is related to the use of the 930 rotors and hubs on the SC. When those kits are sold for the '80 on 930 they use a different caliper adaptor than when they are sold for SC or '78-79 930

Its not the adapter to strut in question, that fits fine. Its the adapter to caliper that needs the washers.

Are you sure it's a 993 caliper and not a 993tt Big Red? The difference is in the height of the caliper. The Big Red is ~10mm taller and needs a larger rotor. The 993 can be used w/ the 930 304mm rotor the Big Red cannot, it is usually used w/ a 322mm rotor.

Its a 993 caliper. The person I bought them from put big reds on to replace these.

You have the wrong adapter if you need washers between the caliper and the adapter.

Thanks Bill. Thats what I thought. I don't think they do much work on early cars, this is the second set of wrong adapters. The first set I ordered for a 911 with big black calipers and they were also did not fit correctly. FVD stated that if I were using 930 rotors I needed a 930 adapter. I thought all 911/930 adapters were the same, since if you were using a radial mount caliper and a 32mm rotor the only other factor is which hub will be used. If you look at Vehicle crafts adapters it is only one type and part number.
