Roll pin stuck in stub axle, how to remove?

I removed my passenger side CV axle the other day in order to replace it. everything went well until I noticed one roll pin was stuck in the stub axle. I tried to get it with vise grips, no luck, I tried using the vise grips and a crow bar to leverage it out, no luck, any tips on how to get it out. Do I have to remove the stub axle? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Sam

A punch should be able to knock it out.

Why remove it? You can just consider it a locating pin ... just go ahead and install the new CV-joint.

The new CV axle has two roll pins already I can't just leave it. And I don't think a punch will work because the back side is solid. Sam

A good machine shop has a specific tool to remove locating pin like this. You can take your new axle to almost any shop and they can have it out in 2 minutes. It is sort of like a small slide hammer thingy that requires 2 actions to remove the pin. 1) the first action slams down on the pin to latch on to it, and 2) the second action reveres the direction and pulls the pin out.

I saw it in action once and did not think to ask for the name, but without it, it is hard to do.

See this thread. I posted a shot of a nifty little home made tool that comes in handy for just such occasions

Coolest slide vise grips I've ever seen. I'll give it a try. Sam

Glad to have helped. I thought you might find them interesting. I made them for removing press fit dowel pins from dies, molds and fixtures. I hate blind holes but sometimes they have to be that way.
good luck with the roll pin
