Too big to fail
|
Ok, *now* I'm ready for track season!
Picked the 911 up from the shop yesterday. My 'green light on!' incident turned into a minor rebuild. New rings, bearings, seals, some head work, new vavle guides, new tensioners, CHT sender, clutch, and lots of little stuff.
The root cause of the problem was excessive oil pressure, which blew out one of the grommets on the oil pump, causing internal bleeding. The low pressure caused the chain tensioners to collapse, and then the chains beat them to death. The reason for the high oil pressure was someone modified the bypass spring, no idea why. For a street car, you could probably get away with it, but on the track, it was just too much. So, this has been an expensive week for me! The main breaker on my house went out last weekend, necessitating an entire new panel; the concrete contractor began work on Satruday, and wanted a deposit; the clutch went out on the bus on Wed; one of the seals appears to have gone out on my lift (still under warranty!); picked the 911 up on Friday. I'm so broke I can't afford to pay attention! The car runs great, and hopefully this fixed the leakage issues. If I had some extra time and cash, I'd get it dyno'd.

Thom,
Sounds like a bad week. All that happened to me this past week was a ruptured appendix and the surgery required to fix it. I'm glad the house and 911 have stayed in better shape than me. Good luck!

Cool that the motor is back together. That was much faster than my ordeal. Was everything else in spec (cylinders, crank, cams, etc?)
Cheers, Ingo

Everything else was fine; I had a little bearing wear, which was probably due to running with low oil pressure.
The nice thing is, it sounds so much tighter now. Now I just need to get the concrete guy off his a$$ to finish the driveway, and get the county to dig up the street and hook up my sewer, and then I can have the garage-warming party!
