PO called to see his old car. We went to lunch...

I bought my 930 on April 29, 2002 from someone who lives about 10 miles from my home. Last week, I got a call that he wanted to see his old car again.

Since he replaced his '86 930 with a '02 996TT, I was interested in seeing (and driving) his new car just as much as he wanted to see his old ride.

Like an adoptive parent getting ready to show the natural parents their kids they've raised... the 930 got a good cleaning in preparation for the visit.

We met at his office, and I threw him the keys so he could drive to lunch. It was interesting watching his expression as he smelled "...that same old 911 smell" (I assume that's a good thing), and the realization of "...oh, I remember how she likes to be shifted now..." when he rowed the gears. He drove the car like a pro (as well he should have after 11 years of prior ownership).

He genuinely missed the car.

After lunch, we returned to his parking lot so I could try out the 996TT. Having driven a 400-hp BMW M5, and a 400-hp Ferrari 360 within the past six months, I thought I knew what to expect. I was wrong. This thing FLIES!

It had so much power... right down low (no lag to 3000 rpm like my 930) that it was a completely different driving experience. The absolute opposite of my 930: Wind noise was absent. Tire noise was a roar.

The 996TT was faster than the Ferrari 360 - but the (I'm ducking here) Ferrari was more fun to drive. Both very different.

Overall, meeting the PO was a wonderful experience. I learned more about the history of my car (the first owner was a dentist!), and really made the PO's day at the same time.

Here are a few pics (too bad it was overcast yesterday):

I'd take your '86 regardless - it has The Look.

Very cool story. Nice of you to accomodate him (of course the promise of a ride in his TT had nothing to do with it )

Great observations on both cars. Classic picture. Thanks for sharing.

I have to say that little duck tail on the TT looks quite cool and understated. Two gorgeous cars.

I live across the street from a proud owner of a 2003 GT2. Last weekend, his buddy came over to do some mod work on his ... 2003 GT2. I got to see two Porsche GT-2 at the same time. They promised me a ride (I was helping with the mods) but ran out of time so never got to sit in the car. Wish I had more time. The story is the GT2 smokes the Twin Turbo.

Both of these cars will appear (with the owners) in a featured article of Excellence in June.

That second pic is great!

I wish the PO of my car would call me. I never really asked any questions about what he put into the motor (built to a 2.9 according to him). Cool guy who owned 9 P-cas over the years.

Great story. You gotta love the P-car crowd. Plus, it's good to hear there's a waterpumper out there that will still waive to us.

It's cool that you are still in contact with the previous owner. That is proof that the 930 was well cared for.
And nice write up.

Great pictures and story. Sounds like he is still very fond of your car and hasn't forgotten his roots.

My PO was a lawyer at the U.S. Attorney's office. Nice guy and he took great care of the car. He introduced me to his mechanic who was a total purist guy from back in the day. I think the shop was called Edelweiss. I remember how fervent they were when they asked me please don't modify the beautiful car. Well, that didn't last long.

The best part was when the PO's business partner told me they both saw me pull into the parking lot. His partner said he jumped up from his seat, totally excited, and couldn't wait to see "his" car again!

Mechanically, I've done a few improvements under the skin that the PO really couldn't see yesterday (H4 headlights, oil cooling, etc...). The only real modification (noticeable to the PO) was the 930S steering wheel. He liked it.

I'm willing to bet he'd buy the car back in a heartbeat!

Is it me or do those minivan dimples in the rear look absolutley stupid. Although, I was pissed when Porsche started putting power brakes in 911s. Maybe in 40 years when I am no longer able to back-up, I'll like 'em.

Sweet

Great Story,

I love the 996TT and that color............................................B ut your car is sweet. What a gorgeous car.

Hey, I am not the previous owner but I would love to see your car. I work in Calabasas right off Las Virgenes Rd (Malibu Canyon)
Maybe we could do lunch and I would let you drive my 2003 Expedition to lunch. Then.......After lunch, I could drive your 930.

What do you say????

Your car probably has a bit more power than mine.

I'm always up for lunch (by the way, my PO works right off Kanan)... but you've got to bring the '67 with you as the Expedition just won't get the juices flowing.

I know how you feel. My first 911 is at Rothsport right now getting "gutted" and having a 3.6 VR transplant. ........but she lives.

The side-by-side pic is cool, as is the story. You can see the stuff Porsche changed and modernized, and the stuff they kept like the shape of the windows on the side - you'd almost think the vent windows are interchangeable.
