Engine back in two weeks. Should I reinstall tranny alone first?

Haven't seen this one discussed here. I have some time on my hands and my engine won't be back for two weeks. Everything else is done and I am itching to get started. I have the tranny ready. Should I put it back in and then mate the engine up later? Taking it all out was my first drop so this will be my first reinstall.

One benefit I see is that I am planning on jacking the engine back up via a wood dolly under the heat exchangers. Putting the tranny in beforehand could take the extra weight off my SSI's.

Is this worth it?

My opinion? heck no.

Mating the transaxle to the engine isn't that hard when out of the car But I had a ***** of a time getting the engine mated to the transaxle with them both in the car. Trying to line up the two while getting the throwout bearing release arm engaged while you are balancing the engine on a jack isn't fun.
I'd put them together and inatall them as an assembly if I were you (and you're glad I'm not)

I agree with putting them back in as one unit. I just completed mt first drop and reinstall as a unit and it was pretty easy to get it back in all by myself.

I've done it several times both ways. I can see a few reasons to put them in together:
1) If you have a shiny new fan & housing, it will not get scratched up
2) The throwout bearing arm is easier to get into the throwout bearing slot while out of the car.
3) You can hook up your reverse lights easier
4) You can get to those dang starter bolts eaiser

There's 4 right off the top of my head. You should not need to do any type of silly balancing on your dolly either if you add the tranny on while out, at least I didnt. It's nothing compared to the weight of your engine.

On the other hand, it would save you a bit of time if you did the tranny now as you wouldnt need to hook up the CV joints and the tranny brace, but in all I think it's worth it to wait...just my opionion.

Install as one unit. The top bolts are tough to reach.
