more wet carpets, drivers footwell. can't find source.....
 

i was doin the annual hoovering of the carpets today and found some wet patches in the drivers footwell. i had driven the car 300 miles in rain last week, and also just now washed it so it could be from either rain or hose pipe.

i had removed the mats so i was looking at the bare floor pan. There was a drip onto the floor right beneath the dash around the area of the speedo.

the other was underneath the carpet to the left side of the footwell, the side panel behind which the cables come through from the door. whats behind the area? could the water follow the cables through from the door? the top of the carpet was dry, just the backing wet.

i have had the screen seal replaced so it is not that. i wonder whether it also might be coming in from the trunk area where the master cylinder is or something...

anyone had similar leaks?

Open your hood and pull back the carpet on the drivers side. Locate the bottom connection for the hood shock. A few inches to the left of that point you should see a plug. IF you see a hole, that may be the source.

I'd also check the bottom driver's corner of your windshield. I had a capillary action leak that very cleverly avoided detection for 6 months and yet constantly kept my left leg wet.

I'd check the bottom left corner of the windscreen despite the new seal. Even if you used a silicone windscreen sealant with the new seal, a little water and some capillary action can earn you wet spot. I had two attempts on the rear and three on the front to resolve my leaks.

bladder control problem?

argh. I've battled leaks the whol 3 & 3/4 years I've owned my car. Mine seems to be leaking at the passenger door. It pools on the inside:confused: of the door seal (at the front bottom corner) and overflows onto the floor where the pedal cluster bolts to. After a strong rain I get about 20mm of water down there. The plastic door lining is intact so that doesn't seem to be the problem.

Ha ha you guys, you should have bought a Targa!! :)

The windshield seal on my '72 leaked on the driver side everytime I drove it during wet conditions. When I finally removed the windshield & seal, I found the seal had been leaking for years & had rusted away the lip supporting the seal and the left corner of the metal under the dash pad. It was pretty bad.

i feel better knowing that you poor fella!:eek: that would drive me nuts. the first thing i did with mine was replace the screen seals - have you done that?

sometimes these leaks are coming from the obvious places.

yep. all window rubbers replaced and sealed with appropriate gunk. I had a leak at the back window ans sunroof but finally managed to eliminate them. It's a PITA driving around with no carpets and the passenger door card missing.

I'm also having the same leaks. The doors are fixable with new rubbers, but the driver-side footwell is another story. It looks so convoluted when I look up under the dash, that there is no way to tell exactly from where it's dripping. It drops on my leg right around the clutch pedal area. I will be checking for the plug by the hood shock though. Never knew about that.

What is the story with the capillary action in the windshield lower corner? Is it a "usual" place for a leak or just something that develops no matter what?

Re windshield lower corners:

If you park your car in the rain, water will always pool there. If there is the slightest hint of a possibility of a less than perfect seal, some water will eventually make its way into the cabin. How much depends on how bad it is.

The windscreen place that replaced my screen and seals last year maintained the top edge of the seal by the roof was the biggest culprit at the front. I am not wholly convinced about that.

it's true that water likes to collect in the lower corners of both the front and rear windshields, but the place to watch for entry is actually the upper driver's side of the windshield seal. for some reason, there is more often than not a tiny opening there where the seal just doesn't cover 100%...it's where a whole lotta watah comes in...

hey glasgow 911sc.....my 71e did that. I took a paper punch and put a hole through the seal. as low as possible. Now it flows out before coming in!

point the hose at the fresh air inlet at the back of the hood--i had a monsoon-type leak that turned out to be a bad drain hose connection. the water leaks from the box into the interior, not the trunk... it hit mostly the passenger side, but it's still worth a (free) look.

i'll try and get a pic of the on the left hand side panel - thats behind the carpets, i only knew the water was there because i happened to put my hands up under the carpet there.

Make sure it's water. It could be a leaky master cylinder.
