Ditto. And the sound! THE SOUND! It gives you chills when one screams past you on the track. #403 was off the pace a little yesterday, though. My qualifying timesheets for the CFoS show him in 11th place, behind older cars (with better drivers, apparently). He was 4 seconds off Cort Wagner's pace in a Cup car, which is less highly tuned. Cort was also a few tenths faster than Buckler in his RSR.

And at the top of the sheets? A WOMAN!?!?! Mary Anne Melnik in a 930 was a tenth faster than Cort, according to the printout I have from CR1 (Blue group), Practice session 3 (which was qualifying for the enduro, I believe.) Is it possible her husband Jeff turned that time and her name is on the transponder id? The top 5 qualifiers all averaged over 100mph for the 2.88 mile road course.

For the street, though, I'll take this one:

adomakin, awesome, makes my "I've got wood" seem somehow inadeqiate. Good one, I'll have to file that away with my favorite quote from Robin Williams in The Fisher King "I've got a hard-on the size of Florida..."

Janus, I know what you are saying, the usual refrain does get old, of course, all of the people who are *****ing want something for the top class. I understand Porsche's desire to stay out of that. Everytime they build something that wins (which costs a fortune) someone changes the rules to disallow it, and their investment is down the tubes.

The saying goes, if you can beat Porsche, change the rules!!

With the 98 evo smacking everyone, then the changes made to make the Mercedes "more competative" Porsche had enough at the factory race level. I don't blame them.

BTW... all the nay-sayers of the new GT.... Wood??? Perma-wood mor like it!!!:D

geof33 03-28-2004 08:52 AM

Oh, and the rear wing looks pretty ricey to me!!!

nostatic 03-28-2004 09:00 AM

the V10 had a very different sound...hard to describe.

But I have to admit that my favorite noises of the day came from 2 Ferraris running on the track during the morning sessions...when those things were screaming down the main straight, it raised the hair on the back of your neck.

racea911 03-28-2004 09:18 AM

The silver Ferrari 360 Challenge car that was parked right next to the GT3 RSR had the same drivers name written above the door as the RSR. Talk about money?

It's funny, I peak out in my garage and like what I see and think that I'm doing pretty well. Than you go to an event like this CFOS and my Porsche's are really just crappy old cars. I still love them, but the amount of money some people have as shown by these cars and the transporters is UNBELIEVABLE. There were several transporters there that would make that $280K RSR look cheap.

I took several hundred pictures at the event.

that gt looks so right. id $hit my pants if i owned one of them. imagine curbing one of them rims........

Yesterday's enduro was a blast to watch. Halfway through we went down and watched at the entrance to the chicane where the fence is very close to the track. It was wild, multiple cars with huge speed differences jamming into the braking zone, facing directly into the setting sun, after 50 minutes of racing - WOW!

I have to say I was pretty impressed with our own Mike (ted #59) who was holding his own in his first wheel to wheel race in a huge 68 car field. Early in race there was a holy ***** moment as he got lapped in the chicane by leader Cort Wagner. Later in the race I saw a furled black flag warning - what was that all about???

I any case - good job Mike, you got big ones buddy!

People talk about Porsche not having a factory prototpye car anymore. Also when I think of a Porsche race car I think of something like this. Something that can take an overall win

I think the complaints are more that there's no factory racing effort, rather than that porsche doesn't make race cars any more.

That RSR is smooth like butter. I wonder what the specs are with and without the restrictors?

geof33 03-28-2004 11:37 AM

Steve,

I hear ya... but Porsche got tired of the FIA butt-f@#$ing them everytime they turned around. So what is the point for them? To go through the Homologation process, bla, bla, bla... why should they? They KNOW they could put together a car that would smack the poo-poo out of everyone...

Did you catch the 24 hrs at Daytona? Brumos built a Porsche based proto... pretty cool really. I think Porsche is doing things behind the scenes that aren't too public. And did you see that the GT3's TOTALLY dominated the GT class. I think the top 8 or 9 spots.

Besides, Porsche racing trickle down technology has always come from the street based cars anyway, with cool bells and whistles coming down from the proto's.

When was the last time you saw a flat 12 in a street car?

Funny, even the client cars need "restrictors"... typical, hamstringing of the P-cars!!!

Here is the Brumos car:

I wish Porsche would take a serious stab at the ALMS GTS class where the Corvette dominates. With Ferrari, Lamborghini (soon), Viper and Saleen also in the class that would make for some good racing! -- Curt

The rules will be changed when any car dominates a series. Just look at Audi they were pretty much untuchable and now they are gone.

fasttech 03-28-2004 12:48 PM

audi is gone because they did not want to field a factory team, the cars are still winning races.( sebring 12 hours...)
Jgordon- an unrestricted gt3 rs engine makes over 500 hp, it is what the brumos cars run.

I think the GT3 could be tweeked for that class. Aren't those guys running around 700-800 Horse? Are they normally aspirated in that class?

Actually geof33, that car is built by FABCAR here in Indy. Dave Klym designed it to take several different engines. Brumos was the first to purchase the chassis and install GT3RS engines built and maintained by PMNA customer engine dept. Porsche has repeatedly said that they will not support the GrandAm Daytona Prototype series. A. Springer and Uwe Brettell have both been qouted as stating that Porsche will not support Daytona Prototype rules.

The concept of the Daytona Prototype(DP) is very simular to NASCAR as they wanted the cars to be somewhat recognizable to the street cars the engines are based off of. That is why the head and tail lamps of each DP must be the same as the engine manufacture, ex. the Doran Lexus has head and tail lights from the SC430, the Brumos Fabcar Porsche had 996 lights, ect. When Brumos showed up to the first open practice at Daytona last year the cars had 996 lights on them. Porsche and PCNA both sent letters to Snodgrass tell him to remove the lights off of the car. I do not know personally how it was worded, but a month later, they came to the 24 Hours with those cheesy covers you can get from Tweeks!

Take care!

geof33 03-28-2004 04:15 PM

Weaver,

That's what I thought. So is it a Doren? I noticed there were many Doren based unit on the field. Who the heck is Doren, btw. Never heard of them.

It's interesting to note the Brumos had the fastest times in Sebring. Racing is just getting too hard to follow with rules changes, classes etc. Crazy!! That's why I'm into F1. Some goofy rules things there too, but not 18 classes/types to try to keep up with!!!:D
