Kevin Doran was the crew chief for Al Holbert during the March/Porsche and Lowenbrau 962 days. He was a big part of the success Holbert and PMNA had in the 80's. He also was the crew chief for the Porsche CART effort in '88 thru '90. He designed and built his own SCCA Sports 2000 which his brother won the runoffs with, I think, in 1995. He also had a short stint in the IRL as a race engineer for Dick Simon. He has owned his own sports car team since the mid 90's. I worked for him in '96 when he ran the MOMO Ferrari 333sp in the World Sports Car series.

And that car was actually build by Dallara! Pretty cool engine and g-box, people used to cheer when it was reved to 7500 rpm for a clean engine kill.

I had an interesting conversation today with the crew chief of one of the teams that is running GT3 Cups in GrandAm. He said that the GrandAm (NASCAR) officals are complete jerks when dealing with the Porsche teams. Their interpetation and enforcement of the rules is totally inconsistent - to the point that the team owner is about ready to pull the plug on the entire effort.

I saw that GT3 RSR today out at Fontana and was thoroughly impressed and also dismayed by the fact that my bank account is not healthy enough for me to buy one. The only thing I noticed to be somewhat strange was the size of the battery, rather large for a race car, I checked out the Racers Group cars and there's were much smaller. Well at the end of the day that guy drives the RSR and I have my 74, I am still happy!

Remember Mark, Grand Am is run by John Bishop. Bishop is the man who started IMSA with the help of the France family. Bishop put all of his power into making the 934/935 non-competitive in his series and also banned the 956 when it debuted ( drivers feet forward of the front centerline, probably warrented ). Bishop had admitted to his dislike of Porsche dominance in motorsports. I'm sure Bishop is a nice guy, but his feelings torward Porsche leave alittle to be desired. Oh, and by the way, he is also one of the American FIA delegates.
In his first race at the helm of Grand Am, he watched The Racer's Group GT car beat the much advertised and hyped Daytona Prototype at their biggest race, the Rolex 24. I don't blame a team owner for leaving a series that tends to change the rules in mid season to penalize a certain manufacturer. If rules are to be change, it need to be after the season is over. Take care. |
Weaver, Good insights.
It is confusing to me that they are trying hard to build 'the' new big race series while at the same time putting the screws to the teams that are driving Porsches - the most entered marquee in the sereis. They need cars right? And, why don't all the Porsche teams just go to ALMS? Plus, as a fan I think the LM prototypes are far more interesting and fun to watch than the DP's anyway. |

Denis, thanks! great shots! I noticed your sig and have been meaning to post this, my stable circa 1972, should look familiar.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1080593791.jpg The Bonnie later became a TT scrambler and the CB 750 a Yoshimura spec road racer. |
Bill, NIIIICE! Looks identical to mine, which is bone stock, I plan on putting it back in service after a full resto and minor performance tweaks this summer. :)
I've owned a few Trumpets over the years, a '75 T160 Trident, a new '78 Bonnie, (last one at the time), a great '69 Bonnie that I never should have sold, and now this one. I've always wanted a '70 since my buddy's older brother bought a new one when he returned from Viet Nam. I was recently explaining to Tyson how a '70 Bonneville is the "73 911S" of Triumphs, they were still good bikes after that, but a little taller and heavier. The TT would have been the Carrera RS, the Trophy would have been a "T" or an "E", etc... |
I liked the '69s T100 best and always wanted a Trident but never got around to buying one. 30 yrs later I wish that I had kept it stock instead of trashing it at the local dirt tracks. That's what the Japanese M/Xers are/were for.
