Re-keying a new lock

I have to replace the locking mechanism (key portion)in the door handle and I recently purchased the kit with new lock, key, etc. Now I have to wonder just how do you reset those tumblers so I can use the exisitng door key that fits the other door as well.

Can anyone direct me instructions on how to re-key or set the tumblers on a new lock to fit the old key? Its possible isn't it?

Thanks
Bob

I tried this approach but was unable to locate the replacement pins. I ended up taking my cylinders to a local locksmith. It cost about $20.00 lock.

Another alternative is to put your existing key into the cylinder and cut off any of the pin that sticks out beyond the cylinder surface.

You don't need a kit of tumblers. Simply (one at a time) remove each tumbler and swap them in the lock mechanisms. You'll wind up with the new lock keyed just like the other. Be careful to do one at a time so you don't loose any springs, or get the tumblers mixed up. Really easy, just pay attention.

Good catch. I forgot that he had the old tumblers. Better yet, just use the old tumblers.
