Bennett Project

I'm overdue for an update. I've been instructing at DE. (GT 3's are fun), and getting my wood ready for next winter before it gets too hot.

As with most projects, it's going slower than I hoped. The engine is assembled up to the cylinders and pistons. I need to do the heads, cam towers, cams etc. Damon will be ready for to start on the painting soon and we are making arrangments to bring the car up to NH around the end of the month. I've got to get back to it. Chris B will be doing the transmission soon.

Prod me direct if I go too long without an update.

Ed :)

good to hear Ed. Hard to fault you for "wasting" your time instructing DEs ;)

Barrys' Transmission

I've got to go to bed but I wanted to post a quick update on Barrys car project. Janus (JanusCole) and I tore the transmission down far enough to see what it needed for parts. If you are wondering what this is all about, see Death of Fellow Pelican BBS Member...

The drainplug had the normal fuzz. No teeth or spare change. This is good.

Janus is strutting his mechanical stuff with this lovely ensemble. The orange punch from Germany and lavender rubber gloves are the look that says Spring! :D
But seriously, I bet this transmission has never been apart. Look at the blue paint on the large nut.

Another use for the fork alignment tool slash cup holder. It works great for keeping the shafts and forks together while removing them as a unit. I used to tie them up with a shop rag but this works much better. My buddy Mark Hald ("Hald") came up with this idea. (If you don't have any smart friends, I suggest you get some. They are great.)

More evidence that this transmission hasn't been rebuilt, at least not in long time. You're looking at 1st and 2nd gear. 1st is on the right, 2nd on the left. Notice the dog teeth on 1st are symetric i.e. shaped like little houses. Porsche switched to stronger asymetric teeth for 1st at some point ('77?) and the replacement 1st dog teeth and slider you can get now are asymetric. I don't know if the symetric 1st gear dog teeth are even available anymore.

If you wondering what is odd about this picture, I removed the slider so you can see the bald spots on the synchros and the shape of the dog teeth.

I left my notes out in the garage but the transmission looked good. I think 1st and 2nd dogs, slider and synchros were needed and a sychro on 3rd or 4th. Don't quote me on that.
The bearing were nice and tight in the case.
Off to bed now.

I was just wondering if there is a newer update that I may have missed ?

ChrisBennet 07-30-2004 08:00 AM

No updates. The transmission is sitting under the bench waiting for it's day in the sun. I think Ed has the bottom end together. The bodywork is the gating item I think. I don't know where in Damon's (Series900) queue that job is.

Bennett 911

Not much to report. Damon was supposed to prep the car this past week. I didn't get over there to check. I've done a little more on the engine and found I needed to get some new oil return tubes. I'll probably pick up the gearbox from Chris on 8/14.

I've been busy with the Parade in Ft Worth. cleaning out the garage, and trying to find room for my Porsche tractor project.

As far as the body work, we started yesterday with prep. Like everybody else Damon is busy. No, buried is better. I'm thinkin' paint by the end of next week. I will post some pics sometime this week.

parts are getting sanded and prepped, the body is really in good shape, nothing ugly at all. I did pull the targa rear window yesterday. The perimeter had been taped and painted once before, and taped and primed again. A peeve of mine is tape lines or overspray, can not stand them. Another reason for pulling the rear window is the potential for rust under the moldings along the 1/4 under the rubber. These can only be removed after popping the glass. Sure enough, rust was found. Small amount of sandblasting neccesary. The doors were removed prior to delivery to the shop, and were unbolted. I will pop the pins, rebolt and align, and pop the pins for paint. Jane has made the request for Guards Red, like fire truck red! I think I am going to leave the trunk alone as far as color change, unless someone wants to come up this week and prep it. I figure it is all covered in carpet. The engine bay is clean, but brown, I will spray it red. All parts are removed and will be sprayed apart , there will be no evidence of poop brown. The car also came with the ugliest bolt on to the decklid whaletail? I mean fugly! Ed and I have looked at it, and decided I should weld the holes, and go for the clean no tail look. I am also looking into PPG for a complete paint and materials donation, see what my regional rep can do for us. Anyone who wants to help mon/tues night, drop a line

Is there enough funds to finish the project?

Michael

Ed B 08-02-2004 04:35 AM

I think there enough funds. I'll let the group know if we run low.

Is it painted? Does anyone have pics if it is painted?

Ed B 09-01-2004 04:47 AM

The car was to be painted yesterday or today. Perhaps Damon will post. I picked up the transmission from Chris a couple of weeks ago. I'm still working on the engine in my spare? time. Next step is timing the cams. We will probably have an assembly party before long.

I think it is LOOKING so good-I am sure they will be pleased

rcm 09-03-2004 09:53 AM

I just went over to Series 900. The Bennet car is sweet. Damon just purchased a new gun and I gotta say those two get along very well. The paint looks elbow deep. I'm fired up again, this car together will be an eyecatcher.

maxnine11 09-03-2004 11:03 AM

Excellent work guys!! Keep it up. :)

1973911s 09-03-2004 11:25 AM

What is the family planning on doing with the car? Doesn't he have a Son that might get to use it?

Michael
