Bennett Project
I'm overdue for an update. I've been instructing at DE. (GT 3's are fun), and getting my wood ready for next winter before it gets too hot.
As with most projects, it's going slower than I hoped. The engine is assembled up to the cylinders and pistons. I need to do the heads, cam towers, cams etc. Damon will be ready for to start on the painting soon and we are making arrangments to bring the car up to NH around the end of the month. I've got to get back to it. Chris B will be doing the transmission soon. Prod me direct if I go too long without an update. Ed :) |
good to hear Ed. Hard to fault you for "wasting" your time instructing DEs ;)

Barrys' Transmission
I've got to go to bed but I wanted to post a quick update on Barrys car project. Janus (JanusCole) and I tore the transmission down far enough to see what it needed for parts. If you are wondering what this is all about, see Death of Fellow Pelican BBS Member...
The drainplug had the normal fuzz. No teeth or spare change. This is good. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1084672106.jpg Janus is strutting his mechanical stuff with this lovely ensemble. The orange punch from Germany and lavender rubber gloves are the look that says Spring! :D But seriously, I bet this transmission has never been apart. Look at the blue paint on the large nut. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1084672176.jpg Another use for the fork alignment tool slash cup holder. It works great for keeping the shafts and forks together while removing them as a unit. I used to tie them up with a shop rag but this works much better. My buddy Mark Hald ("Hald") came up with this idea. (If you don't have any smart friends, I suggest you get some. They are great.) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1084672577.jpg More evidence that this transmission hasn't been rebuilt, at least not in long time. You're looking at 1st and 2nd gear. 1st is on the right, 2nd on the left. Notice the dog teeth on 1st are symetric i.e. shaped like little houses. Porsche switched to stronger asymetric teeth for 1st at some point ('77?) and the replacement 1st dog teeth and slider you can get now are asymetric. I don't know if the symetric 1st gear dog teeth are even available anymore. If you wondering what is odd about this picture, I removed the slider so you can see the bald spots on the synchros and the shape of the dog teeth. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1084672981.jpg I left my notes out in the garage but the transmission looked good. I think 1st and 2nd dogs, slider and synchros were needed and a sychro on 3rd or 4th. Don't quote me on that. The bearing were nice and tight in the case. Off to bed now. -Chris |
I was just wondering if there is a newer update that I may have missed ?
|
No updates. The transmission is sitting under the bench waiting for it's day in the sun. I think Ed has the bottom end together. The bodywork is the gating item I think. I don't know where in Damon's (Series900) queue that job is.

Bennett 911
Not much to report. Damon was supposed to prep the car this past week. I didn't get over there to check. I've done a little more on the engine and found I needed to get some new oil return tubes. I'll probably pick up the gearbox from Chris on 8/14.
I've been busy with the Parade in Ft Worth. cleaning out the garage, and trying to find room for my Porsche tractor project. Ed BSmileWavy |
As far as the body work, we started yesterday with prep. Like everybody else Damon is busy. No, buried is better. I'm thinkin' paint by the end of next week. I will post some pics sometime this week.
Rick |
parts are getting sanded and prepped, the body is really in good shape, nothing ugly at all. I did pull the targa rear window yesterday. The perimeter had been taped and painted once before, and taped and primed again. A peeve of mine is tape lines or overspray, can not stand them. Another reason for pulling the rear window is the potential for rust under the moldings along the 1/4 under the rubber. These can only be removed after popping the glass. Sure enough, rust was found. Small amount of sandblasting neccesary. The doors were removed prior to delivery to the shop, and were unbolted. I will pop the pins, rebolt and align, and pop the pins for paint. Jane has made the request for Guards Red, like fire truck red! I think I am going to leave the trunk alone as far as color change, unless someone wants to come up this week and prep it. I figure it is all covered in carpet. The engine bay is clean, but brown, I will spray it red. All parts are removed and will be sprayed apart , there will be no evidence of poop brown. The car also came with the ugliest bolt on to the decklid whaletail? I mean fugly! Ed and I have looked at it, and decided I should weld the holes, and go for the clean no tail look. I am also looking into PPG for a complete paint and materials donation, see what my regional rep can do for us. Anyone who wants to help mon/tues night, drop a line

Is there enough funds to finish the project?
Michael |
I think there enough funds. I'll let the group know if we run low.
Ed B |
Is it painted? Does anyone have pics if it is painted?
|
The car was to be painted yesterday or today. Perhaps Damon will post. I picked up the transmission from Chris a couple of weeks ago. I'm still working on the engine in my spare? time. Next step is timing the cams. We will probably have an assembly party before long.

damon, that is a good photograph! damn good.
you guys are amazing. i wish i could help on some of the work. |
I think it is LOOKING so good-I am sure they will be pleased
|
I just went over to Series 900. The Bennet car is sweet. Damon just purchased a new gun and I gotta say those two get along very well. The paint looks elbow deep. I'm fired up again, this car together will be an eyecatcher.
|
Excellent work guys!! Keep it up. :)
|
What is the family planning on doing with the car? Doesn't he have a Son that might get to use it?
Michael |
Impressive! It's going to be beautiful and I hope to one day see it in person. It is an unselfish expression of brotherhood, care and respect.
I am humbled by the hard work the local folks are doing. Thank you. |
Puts a smile on my face to see the beautiful red paint!
Good job guys! |
Jane is planning on entering some PCA events including Drivers Ed. MAYBE she will let their three sons drive it.
Ed B |
:D :D :D :D Waiting on a few parts, chris has the list, I will transport the chassis over to Edgar, He will "Pop" the motor in, drive? it back install carpets and interior, and we should be done. I am hoping we can wrap this up and get it to our local PCA end of the year show, "toys for tots" donation, enter it and have Jane there, then hand her the keys! I may be dreaming, but hell the dream has come a long way....http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1095379432.jpg

Damon, Chris & Ed,
Nice, very nice. Damon, excellent idea. |
I'm not as optimistic as Damon. The show is a week away and there are still some parts that I need for the engine in Jane's garage.
Ed |
You guys have impressed us all with this project so much.
Congratultions on a very nicely done, inspirational, generous and honest job! |
Ed B,
Do we need to make a road trip? I do not mind driving down. On me. Rick |
I know you guys aren't doing this for the recognition, but people in your area need to know about this. You've donated tons of time and energy and it would be nice if the local PCA let more people know what has been happening. It's nice to hear how people have reached out to help this family.
Amazing work guys! |
Quote:
I can neither confirm or deny this, but if there was such a project, Damon at Series 900 would be the unsung hero. Even though he only volunteered to paint it for free (not sand it, etc) Damon (and John) have put in at least a couple of weeks work on the car knowing that we can only reimburse him for about half his time. Totally over the top generousity. - An unnamed government source |
Car is now in my garage for engine/tranny install after we find all the missing bits. I'll be working on it today and Sunday. Monday, too probably. (A/X duty Saturday)
Jane would like to help, but won't be home until Monday. |
I have to second Chris on his completely hypothetical diatribe about series 900 and all thier work.
I have seats and such here for cleaning and a little stich work. I'm calling Ed to see if we can make the PCA event. |
Status report
Chris and Rick came to help yesterday. We moved the car to my lift. Cleaned and serviced CIS, checked the brakes, (needs pads), assembled some bits and added to the shopping list. Damon came by late in the afternoon to "assist".
Here are a few photos of us "working" Edhttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/kao14.gif http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1095686991.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1095687023.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1095687052.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1095687077.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1095687104.jpg |
Checking Damon's work in the engine compartment.

Another month has passed and I was just wondering-anymore nice pics?
|
I'm not sure what pics have been had. I know there are pics floating around with pics of Jane and the motor in the car. There is another thread out there somewhere.
I'm going by Ed's this weekend to drop off wheels. I will take pics than. |
Damn that paint looks nice! Infact, it looks like a new car!
You guys are amazing - to devote your time and skills to such a worthy cause. |
Damon, Chris and Ed, (and also everyone else who has contributed -- but mostly those three guys)
I believe this is the single best thing that the Pelican community has ever accomplished. You guys rock, and make us proud. |
Hi guys,
Went to the local PCA end of the season awards dinner. The most inspiring thing for the evening was that Jane (Barry's wife) got up and read a letter she had written to The National Firefighters Memorial about Barry. She mentioned the Barry's p-car and how managed to get it apart and fill up two garage bays with parts. Not a dry eye in the house. She thanked all of you guys for helping to get Barry's dream up and running. She thanked Wayne, the peilican board, drivewerks, Chris Bennet and the rest of the guys who have been in touch with her about finishing the car. Last night rumor had it that Ed, had heard it run, if only briefly and the windshield was going in this week. It's expected to go back to Damon's for interior and trim next week. The final hump. You've done an outstanding thing guys! Enjoy your Sunday. |
