72 and my local Votech painters

I have seen a few paint topics (very few) and I thought I'd throw this out to anyone who doesn't want to blow 3-4k on a new paint job and is willing to take a risk.

First let me say my original Sephia brown car was resprayed Aubergine by the PO. I didn't like the purple at first, but it grew on me despite the now faded (83') laquer job.

I was approached in February by the Mt. Jackson Votech (Virginia) to paint the car for the cost of materials only ($1,010.84). I really was more concerned about rust than the color and agreed to let them go Gaurds Red. Here are the results.

WOW

Looks Great!! I'm not one for color changes, but how and why did they offer to do it just for the cost of the paint? And they took it down to bare metal to start on top of it??!?!?!?

All I can say is WOW.

After going to all that work to strip to bare metal, why did they leave all the trim on the bumpers? That would have been another 15 mins of work.

It's comparable to a "One Day", "Maaco" or "Earl Scheib" job, but with quality paint.

You definitely got your money's worth, but not a lot more. The windows were left in , bumpers on, and as mentioned before, trim on the bumpers. Not to mention the front compartment...

That's an okay thing to do if the car is repainted the same color. But this is the third color on the car.

This particular Vocational Tech school isn't training high-end body & paint students.

I can't say why they didn't take the trim off. I think they left one of the turn signal inserts in too. I'm not complaining though. I couldn't go back to Sephia Brown and I was impressed that they went down to bare metal for a votech.

The shops I checked around in weren't interested in anything but collision insurance type work.

Doug, you killed Aubergine in favor of red?
The paint job looks nice. Now lower it.

I can't believe they stripped it down to bare metal. Good job! Can't beat the price.

Going to metal eliminated any lifting/rection issues with the old paint, there wasen't any complicated bodywork to be done, Virginia is relatively hot and dry in terms of overnight flash rust, and there was a good sized crew of competant workers experienced/trained enough to do the job right quickly.

You're a lucky guy and thanks for the tip. The car looks great!!! Any peeling or wavyness on the panel edges? That is where repaints usually show themselves.

I noticed a little "orange peel" look yesterday on the rear quarter panels. That was a new term for me. Apparantly, it is common on resprays. It looks as though there is an orange peel texture deep in the paint, althought the surface is smooth like glass. At this point I was looking very close to the paint.

That's the response I got from most shops when I was kicking around the idea of repainting my SC.

I think they can rub out the orange peel -- others may know for sure.

I guess I would have pulled the trim off myself. You did save a huge amount of $$ tho.

They can rub it out or color sand it, but only if there are enough coats of paint. So be carefull.

Was the paint an all in one paint or a base/clear coat?

Too bad you couldn't yank the car from them right before they shot it. That would have been worth the grand.

I checked out one of those new glossy "How to Paint Your Car" books from the library last week and on the cover is a guards red early 911 just like yours. There was a guy hovering over the hood with a spray gun and the hood emblem was masked off.
