G50/52 won't hold 4th gear
Hi all,
I've got a bit of an issue with my G50/52 tranny. It just won't stay in 4th gear. When I let go of the shifter, it pops out. It shifts smoothly otherwise (even into/out of 4th gear). What could the problem be? Given that there is going to be some level of rebuild involved and the driving season is just getting started, does anyone see a problem with driving it as is for a while? Should I skip 4th gear or is it acceptable to just hold the shifter in 4th? Thanks in advance...

I'm not positive, but I think that means the dog teeth/gears are bad, or something to that extent. It may not be a problem to drive like that for a while, but if there are chunks of metal floating around in the bottom of your tranny and at some point one of those chunks gets up into the gears it could get really ugly really quick. Hopefully someone like JW will chime in with better info shortly.

This is a rather unusual problem, due to the unique design of the G50 5-speed operating sleeve. I would look to shifter adjustment as the problem before diving into the transmission.
It is certainly NOT a good idea to "hold it in gear", as this will quickly wear the alloy 3rd/4th shift fork, potentially leading to much bigger problems. |
