yeah, there are a bunch of firms that claim to have laser diffusers. One is Lidatek, and K40 makes another. I have an older K40 laser diffuser on my car, and it's only gone off once. For that matter, the V1 has only registered laser once as well. Both were at the same time. For what it's worth, the K40 told me it was scrambling a signal, and the cop didn't pull me over. I don't know if it actually worked.

My question is, if the tailights of a BMW/GMC truck can confuse our detectors, what kind of argument could there be in court? Your honor, I swear, there was a CHevy Blazer with his brake lights on going the other way down the highway at 140.....

Eh, you've got to be willing to be lead rabbit sometimes, in my experience. I once made a 40-mile trip in just over 4 hours without a ticket. I was cruising at 90 mph when a blond in a Camara Z28 convertible passed me doing about 110 or 120. I followed her and after about 30 minutes she dropped back, so I took the lead. Thirty minutes later, she swapped places. We continued that across Indiana, and once I was in KY I dropped back to 90 mph and stayed on it till I was in Lexington since my RD (an Escort at the time) never blipped.

I currently don't have a radar detector, but I've been well-served by advice I got from Ray Banicki at Motodelta: Go as fast as you want, but stay to the right unless you're passing, and don't pass unless you can either see what's up ahead or there's a car ahead of you (and preferably behind you as well) on the left. In short, the secret is to have blocking from slower moving cars.

I haven't gotten a ticket since. Well, on the interstates - I got nabbed in Chicago for doing 47 in a 40 on Lake Shore Drive, about 4 blocks from home. Judge threw that out, though.

I only use V1. It's still worth the money in my opinion

Alf, I've found it's not the tail lights that trigger the V1 laser, it's the brake lights. So, typically when you're at speed, brake lights in front are not an issue. Around town, it can be a pain behind certain vehicles that use LED brake lights. The worst I've found is on a Trailblazer.

Here's a response I got from Mike Valentine.

Wow. You must have been lucky. Ten miles an hour for 4 hours straight without a ticket. :)

I just drove from Dallas to NoVa with a V1. It saved me a couple of times, but as I entered Virginia I saw the signs "Radar detectors illegal".

What do Virginians do to keep speeding?

glenn914-6 04-01-2004 07:43 AM

Virginia is a whole nother ball game...
highway patrol likes to play games and turn radar on and off and see who hits the brakes. If you hit the brakes imediately after they turn on radar gives them probable cause to pull you over and search your car, confinscating your radar and ticketing you (double penalty)$$$ best of my knowledge no one has had any luck fighting this!

Do a Search. There are devices that simply alert you when a police car is in the area, and I think this might be as good protection as anything else can give you. In W WA, radar seems to be a dumped technology. They all seem to use laser, which is hard to beat.

And as far as mounting a defense, last I heard the laser industry is not willing to divulge the methodology, the algorithm that these devices use. Radar uses a doppler effect...the signal comes back at a different frequency. But laser apparently cannot do this, but rather (probably) is measuring the car's (or license plate's) change in position between two "hits" that occur quickly together. Folks in the legal industry are a bit exasperated by the notion that the nondisclose of the algorythm makes it impossible to "face your accuser."

And of course, the whole laser thing has been promoted by, more than anyone else, the beloved insurance industry. And we all trust them, right?

Last time I was in Virginia I was just coming into Richmond on 95 North. I was about 12 to 15 over the posted speed limit. My V1 was mounted high in the window. It was probably close to midnight.

My V1 lighted up like a xmas tree. I looked in the mirror and the trooper was right behind me. I never tapped the brakes but I quickly killed the V1's power by pulling the power plug.

Trooper passed me and didn't bother me at all. Maybe it was because I maintained speed and didn't nail the brakes

I got lucky though

>>>>you were DEAD lucky to run through the state of Indiana with no cops... i've seen over 15 on the loop around Indianapolis.

blah blah blah NONE of this works, and I have the driving record to prove it. I get ticketed uphill, downhill, left, right, corners... and in NORMAL cars 50% of the time. I got pulled over in an ex-cop crown victoria just as often as the porsches/superbirds together. the 5.0 mustang's a rolling billboard screaming 'pull me over!!!' though, and it's black, not anything dumb. i've been ticketed in a buick century, an olds intrigue, a chevy celebrity, a ford tempo, a ford probe, 911, 930, etc etc etc... and only ONCE for 20+ over. you people with clean records are more lucky than good.

for a decent V1 story, I had one happen like the magazine ad states--on the PA turnpike (shudder), it went off, straight ahead. he was in the bushes. detector still said ahead, and behind. the second one was about 1000 ft up on the same side. sick stuff. that was uncle's car, with uncle's detector... i'm not sure how often it would have helped me, thinking about where and how i got the tickets, but you never know.

sorry for that last one... pic screwed up, don't know how to clear a msg you've written.

NicolasW 04-01-2004 10:16 AM

My V1 has paid for itself many times over.

Since I live in the "city", it doesn't get much use other than the stupid signs that tell you how fast you're going. It does however give me a decent warning for photo radar (one street in DC logged more than 700 tickets in one day).

To be really effective, you have to use a Lidatek laser jammer and they are coming out with a new version (LE-30) within a month or two.

Bottom line, if you go on any highway or "open road" trips, you need a V1.

tobluforu 04-01-2004 10:20 AM

V1, get it and be happy that you did. The viper in my garage has one that is hard wired. I have been driving that car for 2 months and it has saved my ass 4 times already. Do you know how hard it is not to speed in a car that will do 53 mph is first gear? Half the time I'm just cruising in first gear around town. Because the car is loud, the cops will follow me for the heck of it. V1!

jbryant 04-01-2004 11:03 AM

V1

It has saved me 400$ tickets many times.

jmarenas 04-01-2004 11:22 AM

V-1

NEVER LEAVE HOME WITH OUT THE V-1 in any car I drive, have owned for 5 years, upgraded 6 months ago. Saved me MANY times. Nothing however can save you from Laser unless you are lucky enough to pick up scatters from others ahead. Usually laser is only targeted when your the lone car. Thus be careful when Lead of the pack. John

Buy the V1!!!
Mine saved me twice today on the Bush Tollway.
V1 is standard equip. for "HP Junkies", and has the
"Dark Side" seal of approval!!
I hate being late for a Tee time!!!

Wayne 962 04-01-2004 12:17 PM

Before you guys jump and buy the V1 - you should read some educated, expert, opinions. I did, and I settled on the Bell as being the best one out there (then we started carrying them as a result)

See this site (appears to be temporarily down right now):
