25% price increase from '86 to '87 ?
WOW, a big jump in list price from 1986 ($31,950) to 1987 ($40,425).
What cause this huge jump? The G-50 (new for '87) could not have caused a $8,475 price increase. I know the exchange rate was changing a lot in the '80 but a 26% price increase is quite a lot for one year! Any Ideas? ![]() ![]() PS -- please post more window stickers, lots of interesting info on them

My dad bought an '87 turbo look targa in November 1986. He looked at it a couple of times bofore buying it. Unfortunately, in the time that it took him to decide, Porsche jacked the price up by $5k IIRC.

This has gone on for decades. You see, when the dollar gains vs. German currency...Porsche prices go up. When the dollar falls vs. German currency? Porsche prices go up. It's a "Porsche economic rule"....The Germans aren't alone in this. Back during my waterman days, I really wanted a Rolex submariner. Couldn't quite justify the price. Now that I'm too old to be a waterman? I still can't quite justify the price.

Paul hit it on the head. They never adjusted for the dollar gaining, but when it slipped, like during the '86 M.Y., they would raise prices as often as they pleased. The '86 sticker shown has to be from the beginning of the M.Y. run, (like Sept. '85), because I sold them new that year and don't remember that low price.
From the beginning of the '86 M.Y. to the end, a 930 went from a base price of $49,000 to $61,000, all for the exact same 1986 model car!! ![]() In other words, for resale purposes nobody cares when you bought it or what you paid, all '86 930s were worth the same 1 year later. (All other things on the car being equal). Friggin' crazy. The actual jump from the last '86 models to the first '87s was very small. ![]()

Reaganonmics and the trickle down theory. Star Wars, Iran Contra, the SpaceShuttle disaster... Vanna's Legs, Cosby's sweaters & Ted Dansons toupee.
Factor all of those things in and the rising costs of 1996 - 1997 were not surprising at all. ![]() Last edited by Sonic dB; 06-08-2004 at 04:10 AM.. |

I just took a look at the sticker for my '87 coupe and it was up another $1K to $41440 for the base price. Not sure where it fell in the model year but it was first registered on 7/28/87.
