Get rid of a 911 for what?

What would the reasons be for getting rid of a 911? I'm contemplating buying another sports car (a Miata so flame away) but I don't think I'll ever get rid of my targa. My problem is that I have no AC (I looked at several options and all cost more than an early 90s Miata), too worried about door dings and less than 20 mpg of supreme. Other reasons I've read on the board are financial hardship, needing more seats and buying a newer 911, but what have you heard?

Add an AC to your 911 - should be cheaper than a Miata. And be like me - don't keep your car at concourse level - appreciate the dings and imperfections, and relish them.

Why are you burning "supreme" in an SC? Did you modify the engine and increase the compression ratio? If not, there's no point to premium fuel. From other posts I've read, you should be able to add (a quite effective) AC system for about $1500, assuming you do much of the actual installation yourself. As to the Miata, I think they're "nifty" cars, but not something I've always wanted to own.

Good luck,

Yep, financial stuff here, that's why I'm selling, and my plan is to also get a miata, but assuming nothing unexpected happens I'll be back in a Porsche in a year or less. The reason for the miata, I don't think there's anything else that I could get for $3-5K that would be as reliable, cheap and fun while I am waiting. And since the 911 has been my daily driver I do need something fun to keep from going into detox.

damn dude, save you dignity and stay away from a miata. Their just so... well... GAY. maybe consider a well sorted 914. you could certainly pick one of those up for 3-5K and it would be a very fun car. Or just go all the way and get the WRX.

I just can't see guys driving miatas in TX

Isn't 91 octane recommended for our cars? I never read the owner's manual, just what I've heard hear on PP.

a buddy of mines wife had a miata when they met, he ended up driving the thing when they got a new car together. he's about 6'3", 225 and has a big ace head. he looked very funny in the car. he could not hardly fit in it with the top up, so it was down alot and his big ol head looked dam funny. stuck out above the windshield top no less

so my point with this is as follows- if you have a big head, don't dare get a miata. if i remember correct from our drives and the autocross a few weeks ago, you chris don't wear a small or medium size hat.....

I was going to be all PC, and make a comment about the Miata being "GAY", but I just realized that the only person I know who owns a Miata is a gay man.

It's not my head that's big, just my cheeks. Because of that, I wear an XL helmet. South Beach diet starts tomorrow.

And aren't Miatas great track cars? I sure would worry less $$ about balling one of those up.

What about a 944?

I don't get how using 'supreme' gas is a downside to the 911 (whether its actually needed or not). Its, what, 25 cents more than 87? So, if you're driving 10,000 miles a year getting 20mpg thats a whole $125 per annum that you're saving. wow

Thanks for doing the math for me. Never thought of it that way. I just like to b1tch when I pull up to the pumps and see supreme at $2.45/gal.

Well,

I'd look for an older RX-7 or a Starion/Conquest.

Both are easy to bump HP using bolt on stuff. RX-7's are a blast to drive. Starions are uncommon and perform really well.

You can get a good example of either for a few grand.

octane?

Does an American octane differ from an Euro octane?
Where I live (Sweden) we only have 95, 96 and 98 octane fuel.

Yes. I'm too lazy to hunt down the data but the Euro figure is higher than the US one by a couple of units I think.

Yep, Euro gas uses RON and we use MON or something like that. Our gas equivalent to 98 is 93, I think. I run 93 in my Carrera.

I have thought about a 914 or 944 instead of the miata, but since the main reason is money.... yes even if I can get into one of those for cheap I still will have to buy parts (I've heard about timing belt and water pump problems on 944's, and 914's aren't known for ice cold AC), and they'll be older and more prone to having stuff wear out. The miata should be much newer and have more life in it.

Yeah, a miata for a man in Texas is a bit of a strain. I am confident and comfortable in my masculinity and hetersexuality. I'm sure the fella's in their F350 dually's will be after me, but they'll have to catch me first.

Besides, I think Houston is the least "Texan" of the large cities here.
Some interesting facts http://www.houston-guide.com/press/

One of the few U.S. cities with permanent ballet, opera, symphony and theater companies.
More than 30 museums.
With 10,000 theater seats, Houston ranks second only to New York.

More than 8,000 restaurants feature a wide variety of ethnic cuisines.
