901 Trans Problem

Hello,

I got the transmission on the bench tonight. Just to clean it up get the old grease off of it and I noticed that when I turn it will turn smooth for almost 1 whole revolution. Then it kind of binds up for a second. It will do this in every gear and in neutral.

Do I need to hold off on puting the motor back in and get this fixed or??

It’s the original one from my 71` 911 T, when I drove the car (been 2 years now) the trany felt a little wore out, but didn’t grind or make a ton of noise.

Thanks,
Kyle

Do you still have the bolts that hold the output flanges installed? Depending on the configuration of the transaxle, they have a teat on them which holds the center shaft of the differential in place. If you take these bolts out, that shaft can slide down and interfere with the case.

OK

If I loosen up the bolts on the front cover just a tiny bit, it turns smooth as silk. What the hell is going on with this thing?
