993 is beautiful, but for me, the 930 has it beat in all other comparions....at least the ones that matter to me.

Test drive both, if its pure driving fun you want, you'll choose the 930. I have a '79 911, converted to a cab, 5 speed. Engine is a 3.3l, sc cams & a K27 turbo. When the boost kicks in, its like an amazment park ride.....no better feeling, while driving at least!

I agree w/ glee911. In terms of pure driving pleasure, my former '86 Carrera wins hands down.

However, I must add that my Carrera had several mods done to it to handle the way it does, too. My C4S doesn't have any mods as of yet. Every 993 owner who has had put on new shocks & springs (i.e. Bilsteins & RoW springs, or PSS9s) has sworn that this modification/addition has completely changed its handling characteristics. Some have even gone on to say that it feels quite similar to a Carrera, or an SC. So, for me, that's great news and I'm looking forward to the changes in the near future.

It's a tough call. I love them both. If you need someone to check a car out, I'd be glad to do it.

Nah, 993's suck. I hate mine. It's a beater.

Simple choice in my mind. If the car is going to be a daily driver, you will be better suited with the 993. If its a toy, the 930 would be the one.

Daily driver on a bad day in SoCal.....overcast!

Take one 'perfect' 993............give it character in the form of NO exhaust muffler........put in RS 3.8 cams ($400 labor w/engine out of car).......and you have the ultimate 911.

Leland - I have owned 2 993s and a 930. In stock form they have comparable straight line acceleration, but I do not think the 993 could hang with the 930 in high speed type runs. All the people who tell you how ungodly fast their 930s are have sunk lots of cash into them (or the PO did). I have as much money in upgrades in my 930 as the car cost. 930s also tend to eat clutches due to their all or nothing power characteristics. The 930 is much more fun, but also much more expensive to own (particularly if you get bitten by the power and upgrade bug). The person who suggested a 965 is spot on. Those cars bridge the gap somewhat between the 993 and 930, but still retain the most desirable 930 characters. The 965 prices also seem to get depressed more than they should due to an unfair association with the 964. The 965 powertrain has nothing to do with the 964.

i will beg to differ with that quote; from reading and actual experience. that is both vehicles being stock, or very close to stock.
the 993 does 168-170 mph right out of the box.

I think I'm gonna have to steer myself towards a '86-'88 930.
I adore the 993, but I think a 930 is more what I would love to own.

'Course, tomorrow ask me the same question and I'll say I'm dying for a 993. :)

I digress.

Thanks for the imput guys, there is some good information in this thread.

A stock 930 and stock 993 are pretty close in acceleration - with a very different approach. The 993 will have a higher top end as it is more aerodynamic.

A few "betters" for you:

Daily Driver = 993
Fun to Drive = 930
Refinement = 993
Air Conditioning = 993
Cost to Own = 993
Cost to Buy = 930
Lower Maintenance = 993
Sex Appeal = 930
DIY Repair = 930

I like the low end torque of the 993. If I ever replace my 930, it will be with a 993C2S or 993TT.

89turbocabmike 04-03-2004 11:01 AM

Make no mistake about it, the 993 is a fast car. If you compare stock turbo to stock 993, the 993 is a more capable car, especially at high speed. The 930 is the classic look and raw feel of the turbo. The 993 is the cultured one.

Funny how those of us with turbos think alike. I could never replace my turbo cab. As I mentioned before, I checked out a 98 C2S as a possible addition to the family stable and it was very impressive. We all know it's the last and best of the NA air cooleds. It still comes up short to the last and best air cooled 911.. the 993TT.

A 94 flatnose sure would be a fine pickup too, if they were not priced in the nosebleed range. (at least for me)

some of us just gotta turbo... and that's the way it is. :D

not to change your mind back to 993 but check out this bad boy:

A stock 78 up 930 has 300 hp and will do the 1/4 in around 13 seconds, a stock 993 has from 270 -282 hp and weighs more and will do the 1/4 in around 14 seconds, so performance is not similar, as far as performance expenses with a 930 spend $100 on a euro 1 bar spring you have another 60-70hp.

The 930 was the top of the line 911, full leather interior and all options and they are relatively rare, they were basically the continuation of the 911RS as a factory race car out of the box.

But again as I said I rather have a 993 for a daily driver to slug it out in traffic vs the 930 which get hot sitting still along with the low end lag from stop and go.

Milu 04-03-2004 12:12 PM

Any low priced 993 is going to need a little attention. Why not look for a 993 with a view to fitting an aftermarket supercharger as part of the tlc process?

Max - what I meant is that if you had both cars at even throttle at 60 MPH and then took off I thnk the 930 will easily pull away. It has a much broader torque curve once you get into the boost zone (over 3000 RPM).

JP911 04-03-2004 02:47 PM

I know it's all about what you're going to buy right now, but in the long run you will probably end up owning a 930 and a 993. Maybe not at the same time, but you know what I mean. If you're not totally settled on the 930, check out the C2S and the C2 (both silver) on this site: www.truspeedmotorcars.com. I've been ogling the C2, but it won't happen for me right now.
