84 Turbo Look, how can I tell?

I have been away from the forum for some time. Had to sell my 72 due to un-employment. I am now looking at an 84 Turbo Look and wondered if there is an easy way to tell if it is the real mccoy. I know there might be some obvious things like where they might have welded conversion flares onto the body and such, but can you tell from the VIN if it a factory Turbo Look option? I am assuming at this point that the owner was not the original and does not have the original window sticker.
Thanks in advance, John
